Chapter 5 - The Locked Server Room

The silence in the emergency ward was deafening.

Victor’s mouth parted slightly, but no sound came out. Sheriff Hayes turned slowly, his sharp lawman's gaze shifting from Emma’s bruised face directly onto Victor’s immaculate woolen collar.

""Section 4?"" Sheriff Hayes asked slowly. ""Victor, you told me three months ago that Claire’s will left everything to Daniel with zero executor oversight.""

""It does!"" Victor snapped, his polished voice suddenly climbing an octave higher. ""The girl is fabricating stories out of whole cloth! She's facing twenty years for kidnapping, so she's throwing dirt at the wall hoping something sticks. Daniel, are you really going to take the word of a minimum-wage waitress who barely knew your wife over the man who held your hand while you buried her?""

""My wife’s final will was redrafted two days before the car crash,"" I said, my voice dead and cold. ""Victor brought the documents to the hospital while Claire was in labor. I was terrified she was going to bleed to death on that delivery table. I signed whatever paper he shoved under my nose.""

The memories hit me like hammer blows. The blinding fluorescent lights of the maternity ward. Claire pale and weeping from the pain. Victor handing me a leather folder, whispering: Daniel, sign the power of management. If something happens to you in the boardroom, the trust must protect the children from Claire's predatory relatives.

I hadn't read the fine print. I had trusted my father’s most loyal lieutenant.

""Sheriff,"" I said, turning to Hayes. ""The central security hub at Blackwood Ranch records twenty-four-hour continuous audio and video from every room on the property, including the nursery, the administrative office, and the HVAC mechanical room. Victor told me the system suffered an internal glitch three days ago and wiped the drives.""

""That glitch happened right after the girls' first breathing crisis,"" Emma added, her eyes wide. ""I saw him carrying four external backup drives out of the control room on Tuesday afternoon. He locked them in the floor safe inside the main study.""

""Those drives are private corporate property,"" Victor hissed. ""Under Montana privacy statutes, no one touches Blackwood Logistics servers without a federal warrant.""

""I own Blackwood Logistics, Victor,"" I growled, stepping into his personal space, towering over him until he was forced against the glass doors. ""Every brick, every wire, every server blade, and every drop of sweat on that ranch belongs to me. Sheriff, I am officially authorizing a complete, immediate search of my own property. I want Victor Hale detained until those drives are examined.""

""You can't detain me without formal charges!"" Victor shouted, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. ""I’m an officer of the corporation! I demand my attorney!""

Sheriff Hayes unclipped a pair of steel cuffs from his belt. ""You aren't under arrest yet, Victor. But you sure as hell are being detained for questioning regarding tampering with evidence and child endangerment. Marcus, step outside and put your hands on the hood of the cruiser before I decide to charge you with obstructing a peace officer.""

The guard, who had been lingering nervously near the door, immediately turned around and walked out with his hands raised. Victor glared at me, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred.

""You’re making the biggest mistake of your pathetic life, Daniel,"" Victor whispered as Hayes clicked the handcuffs around his wrists. ""You’re an empty suit. Claire knew it. That’s why she gave me control. Without me, you couldn't run a lemonade stand, let alone a hundred-million-dollar logistics firm. You'll lose everything.""

""Take him out,"" I told the sheriff.

Once the doors closed behind them, Dr. Walsh placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. ""Daniel, Sophie’s oxygen levels are stabilizing. The dexamethasone is opening up her airways. Lily and Grace are both resting comfortably. The glycol levels were caught in time. In another twelve hours of exposure... their lungs would have suffered irreversible scar tissue.""

I felt the tears finally break over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks. Twelve hours. If Emma hadn't smashed through that nursery door and carried them into the freezing blizzard, I would have walked into three silent, cold cribs tomorrow morning.

I walked over to Emma’s gurney. She looked so small sitting there, her knuckles bandaged, her skin pale, wearing a faded blue hospital gown over her torn work pants.

""Emma,"" I said softly, dropping to one knee beside her bed.

She looked at me, self-consciously pulling the blanket over her lap. ""Are they going to be okay, Mr. Vance?""

""They’re going to live,"" I whispered, my voice breaking. ""Because of you. Every single breath my daughters take for the rest of their lives belongs to you.""

She swallowed hard, a tiny, sad smile touching the corner of her lips. ""I kept thinking about my mom. When she was sick, she told me that the only thing that truly matters in this terrible world is protecting innocent people who can't fight for themselves. I couldn't let those babies die in that smoky dark room.""

""We're going back to the ranch,"" I said, standing up and offering her my arm. ""I need you to show me where you saw those drives. We're going to tear that house apart until the truth is laid bare.""
