Chapter 8 - The Ledger of Truth

Twenty-four hours later, the safehouse in downtown Chicago was quiet. A crackling fire burned in the stone hearth, casting long, warm shadows across the polished oak floorboards.

Audrey sat wrapped in a heavy fleece blanket, a warm cup of cocoa cradled between her hands. Piper sat directly beside her on the rug, chattering away happily while coloring a picture of a smiling yellow sun with bright blue clouds. Molly watched from the kitchen counter, her expression a mix of relief and bittersweet sorrow.

Gabriel entered the room carrying a heavy steel lockbox—the contents of Evan Bennett’s safety deposit box, retrieved only hours earlier by Samuel.

""It’s all here,"" Gabriel announced, setting the heavy metal box on the dining table. He unlocked the latch with Molly’s brass key and flipped open the lid.

Inside lay three encrypted flash drives, a thick black leather ledger filled with Evan’s meticulous handwriting, and a sealed envelope labeled: For Molly and Gabriel.

Gabriel handed the envelope to Molly, but she gently shook her head. ""Read it aloud, Gabriel. We’re in this together.""

Gabriel carefully slit the envelope and unfolded the handwritten letter. Evan’s sharp, steady handwriting seemed to bring the brave accountant back to life in the quiet room:

""If you are reading this, it means my fears have come true. Walter Pike knows I have cracked his double-entry bookkeeping. For two years, Walter has been laundering over fifty million dollars through foreign accounts, utilizing Rourke Logistics container manifests to traffic high-value contraband. When Audrey discovered this, she went to the FBI, unaware that Special Agent Miller in the Chicago field office was on Walter’s payroll.

Walter framed the explosion at Lake Geneva to silence Audrey and paralyze Gabriel with grief, knowing a heartbroken man is blind to the shadows around him. Audrey survived because Walter needed her alive to access the private family trust funds that required her personal signature. To Molly, my soul, take Piper and run to Gabriel. He is a dangerous man, but he is an honorable man. To Gabriel, forgive yourself. The fire was never your fault. Take this ledger to the United States Attorney General. Burn Walter’s empire to the ground, and protect my girls.

With love and duty, Evan Bennett.""

Silence filled the room. Molly covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with silent, cathartic tears. Her husband had not died in vain; his courage had preserved the lives of everyone sitting in that room.

Audrey set her mug down and stood up, walking over to Molly. She took Molly’s hands in hers, looking deeply into the young widow’s eyes.

""Evan came to the sanitarium six months ago,"" Audrey revealed softly. ""He disguised himself as an industrial air-conditioning repairman. He slipped a note under my door that said: Hold on, Mrs. Rourke. Your husband is looking for you, and I am going to show him the way. Evan gave his life so that I could be standing here tonight. Molly, you and Piper will never, ever have to run again. You are part of our family now.""

Piper looked up from her coloring book, holding up her sheet of paper. ""See, Mommy? I drew Mister Gabe with a big smile! Look, Auntie Audrey, his mouth goes all the way up to his ears!""

Gabriel looked down at the little girl, his eyes shining with profound emotion. He walked over, knelt down, and picked Piper up in his arms, resting her small head against his shoulder.

""She’s right, you know,"" Gabriel said, looking between Audrey and Molly. ""Three days ago, I was a dead man walking through an empty mansion. A little girl gave me a pink envelope and reminded me that an empty chair is just waiting for someone who needs to belong. Now, we finish this. Tomorrow morning, Walter Pike and every corrupt official in this city will face justice.""
