Chapter 6 - The Iron Fortress

Pine Ridge Estate sat nestled in a deep Canadian valley, surrounded by ten-foot wrought-iron fencing and towering spruce trees. From the outside, the cedar-and-stone architecture resembled a five-star alpine resort, but behind the decorative facades were bullet-resistant glass, reinforced steel doors, and patrol dogs trained to tear intruders to ribbons.
At precisely 4:15 PM, the winter silence was shattered by a deafening series of controlled concussive charges.
The heavy wrought-iron security gate blew inward with a shower of sparks and twisted metal. Gabriel’s convoy of three black armored Suburbans roared up the winding, snow-covered driveway, their engines screaming as they drifted around the icy bends.
Before the compound’s private security guards could raise their weapons, Samuel’s tactical team deployed with military precision, unleashing non-lethal flashbang grenades that disoriented the guards and illuminated the falling snow with blinding white light.
Gabriel moved like an unstoppable force of nature. Wearing a tactical vest over his dark sweater, he breached the heavy glass doors of the administrative wing, his Kimber drawn and steady. Two private guards in suits drew sidearms from behind the reception desk, but Gabriel fired twice into the floorboards at their feet, the ricochets whining with terrifying finality.
""Drop them!"" Gabriel’s voice shook the chandeliers. ""Drop the weapons, or the next rounds go between your eyes!""
The guards looked at Gabriel’s furious, unblinking glare and instantly dropped their handguns onto the polished slate tiles, kicking them away with trembling feet.
""Where is she?"" Gabriel demanded, stepping up to the trembling facility director, who was trying frantically to wipe data from a desktop computer. Gabriel slammed his hand onto the monitor, shattering the screen. ""Audrey Rourke. Room number. Now.""
""S-Suite 402,"" the director stammered, raising his hands in surrender. ""The medical team... they're already on the roof! They're taking her to the helicopter!""
""Samuel! The roof, now!"" Gabriel shouted over his shoulder.
Gabriel took the stairs three at a time, bypassing the slow-moving elevators. His chest burned with exertion, his lungs desperate for air, but the fire inside him pushed him faster than he had ever run in his life. Behind him, flanked by two armed operatives, came Molly, holding the silver bracelet tightly in her fist.
They burst onto the fourth-floor landing just as the heavy rooftop access door clanged shut. Above them, the deafening thrum of helicopter blades began to beat against the freezing mountain air.
Gabriel rammed his shoulder against the steel rooftop door, breaking the latch with a brutal smash. He stepped out onto the open-air helipad amidst a blinding vortex of snow kicked up by the spinning rotors of an AgustaWestland helicopter.
Two guards in heavy tactical winter coats were forcibly dragging a slender woman in a long white wool coat toward the open cabin of the aircraft. Her face was obscured by a dark scarf, but Gabriel would have recognized that posture, that graceful silhouette anywhere in the world.
""Audrey!"" Gabriel’s scream tore through the roar of the turbine engines.
The woman froze. Even through the whipping wind and the deafening engine noise, the sound of her name spoken in that familiar, agonized baritone seemed to strike her like lightning. She pulled against her captors with sudden, desperate strength, ripping her scarf away.
Her golden-blonde hair whipped across her face. Her striking blue eyes, identical to the portraits that hung in Gabriel’s lonely mansion, widened in sheer, disbelieving terror and hope.

""Gabriel?"" she cried, her voice swallowed by the wind.
The guard holding her drew a compact submachine gun from beneath his parka, leveling it straight at Gabriel’s chest.
