Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

Gabriel stepped into the beam of the lantern, his hands held conspicuously away from his sides, his demeanor imposing and steady despite the barrels aimed directly at his chest. Molly stayed half-concealed behind a scorched stone pillar, her heart thumping so violently she could hear it in her ears.
""Let the little girl walk to her mother, Walter,"" Gabriel commanded, his voice rumbling through the hollow ruin. ""You have me. You have the access codes to the offshore clearinghouses. There’s no leverage left to gain by hurting a baby.""
Walter threw his head back and laughed, a mocking, theatrical sound that grated against the silence of the snowstorm. ""You still think you're the master of the board, don't you? Look at you, Gabriel. The grand king of Chicago, brought to his knees by a crayon drawing and a dead wife's ghost.""
Walter gestured to one of the mercenaries, who stepped forward holding an electronic tablet and a stack of notarized documents.
""Sign the irrevocable transfer of Rourke Freight and Logistics over to the Pike Trust,"" Walter ordered. ""And then, Gabriel, you will take the pistol from your pocket and end your own miserable life. Just like you should have done three years ago.""
""And Piper?"" Gabriel challenged, stepping forward an inch. ""What happens to the child?""
""She and her charming mother will join Evan in the lake,"" Walter said casually, as if discussing the weather. ""Loose ends, my boy. A good attorney never leaves witnesses who understand the ledger.""
Piper suddenly kicked Walter’s shin with all her might. Her little oversized shoe landed squarely against his ankle. ""You're a mean man! Mister Gabe is going to give you coal!""
Walter snarled, raising his gloved hand to strike the child.
""Don't you dare touch her!"" Molly screamed, stepping out from behind the stone pillar, leveling the revolver directly at Walter’s forehead with two trembling, determined hands.
The mercenaries instantly swung their rifles toward Molly, but in that split-second distraction, Gabriel moved with terrifying, predatory speed. He drew his concealed Kimber, firing two rapid shots. The first mercenary collapsed into the snow before he could pull his trigger. The second took a round through his shoulder, his rifle clattering against the charred floorboards.
The third mercenary swung toward Gabriel, unleashing a deafening burst of automatic fire. Splinters of burnt wood and concrete exploded into the air. Gabriel dove across the icy expanse, tackling Walter to the ground while shielding Piper with his broad shoulders.
""Run, Molly! Grab Piper and run!"" Gabriel bellowed as he traded shots with the remaining gunman.
Molly dashed forward through the crossfire, scooping Piper into her arms and holding her daughter’s face against her neck. ""I’ve got you, baby! Mommy’s got you!""
Walter scrambled backward on the frozen floor, screaming at his wounded man. ""Kill them! Kill them all, you incompetent fool!""
Gabriel rolled, aimed through the drifting smoke, and ended the threat with a single, precise shot. Silence slammed back into the ruined estate, broken only by the howling wind and Walter’s frantic, ragged breathing.
Gabriel rose to his full height, looming over his former mentor like an avenging demon. He raised the gun, pressing the smoking barrel directly between Walter Pike’s eyes.
""Give me one reason not to pull this trigger,"" Gabriel whispered, the cold fury in his voice making Walter tremble violently.
Walter swallowed hard, his aristocratic arrogance evaporating into sheer terror. ""Because... because if you kill me, you will never find out where she is.""

Gabriel froze. ""Where who is?""
Walter offered a bloody, trembling smirk. ""Audrey. Gabriel... Audrey didn't die in that fire.""
