Chapter 7 - Shattered Illusions

""Get back!"" the mercenary screamed over the howling rotor blades, keeping one arm clamped around Audrey’s throat as a human shield. ""Step back, or I drop her right here!""
Gabriel froze, his gun raised, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged beast. He could see the terror in Audrey’s eyes, see the pale gauntness of her cheeks that spoke of three years of isolation, sedatives, and psychological torment.
""Let her go,"" Gabriel said, his voice carrying clearly over the turbine hum, cold and lethal. ""Walter Pike is in a dungeon beneath Chicago. The money is gone. The pilot is in custody. You are dying for a man whose bank accounts have already been frozen by the federal authorities.""
The mercenary hesitated, his eyes darting toward the cockpit. The helicopter pilot was waving frantic hands, pointing toward the tree line where Samuel’s snipers were taking aim from the perimeter.
In that fraction of a second, Molly appeared at the rooftop doorway. She didn't shout. She didn't draw a gun. Instead, she held up her right arm, the silver charm catching the glaring white lights of the helipad.
""Audrey!"" Molly shouted, stepping forward into the blizzard. ""Evan sent me! Evan Bennett kept his promise to you!""
Audrey’s gaze snapped from Gabriel to the young woman in the doorway. She saw the glittering heart charm—*A.R. Always Remember.* It was the symbol of the secret network Audrey had set up before her disappearance, the token she gave only to those who had sworn to protect the vulnerable.
""Evan?"" Audrey gasped, tears welling instantly in her eyes.
""He found your evidence!"" Molly cried out. ""Gabriel knows everything! You're safe, Audrey! Bite him!""
Without a second thought, Audrey threw her head backward, slamming the crown of her skull into the mercenary’s nose. A sickening crunch echoed above the engines. The guard cried out in agony, his grip loosening as blood erupted from his nostrils.
Audrey dropped instantly to the snowy deck.
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He fired a single shot over Audrey’s ducking head, catching the mercenary squarely in the tactical vest plate. The impact threw the guard backward against the helicopter’s landing skid. Before the man could recover, Gabriel closed the distance in three massive strides, disarming him with a brutal kick and sending the weapon spinning off the edge of the roof into the snowbanks below.
The helicopter pilot, realizing the mission was catastrophically compromised, pulled the collective lever. The aircraft lifted violently, tilting sideways as it fled into the howling blizzard, vanishing into the gray clouds.
The rooftop fell suddenly quiet, save for the whistling wind and the sound of ragged, sobbing breaths.
Audrey remained on her knees in the freezing slush, her hands covering her face, her body trembling uncontrollably. She looked up slowly, terrified that this was another cruel hallucination induced by Walter’s doctors.
Gabriel dropped his weapon into the snow. He fell to his knees in front of her, his massive frame shaking with a vulnerability no living soul in Chicago had ever witnessed.
""Audrey,"" he whispered, his voice cracking into pieces. ""It’s me. It’s really me.""
Audrey reached out a pale, trembling hand, her fingers tentatively brushing his rough, stubbled cheek. When she felt the warmth of his skin, the real, tangible pulse of his life beneath her fingertips, she let out an agonizing, beautiful sob that tore through three years of darkness.
""You're alive,"" she wept, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. ""Walter told me you were shot... he told me you were dead in an alley... he said if I tried to leave, he would desecrate your memory...""

Gabriel wrapped his enormous arms around his wife, pulling her so tight against his chest it felt as though he could fuse their shattered souls back together. He buried his face in her hair, weeping openly, unashamedly, rocking her back and forth in the Canadian snow.
""I’m here, my love,"" Gabriel whispered against her ear, his tears freezing on his cheeks. ""I’m here. And I will never let you go again.""
