Chapter 2 - Sins of the Ash

The snow had begun to fall over Lake Michigan in heavy, swirling sheets, swallowing the highway in a blinding white fog. Gabriel drove his armored SUV with ruthless precision, dodging the icy ruts on the winding road that led toward Lake Geneva. Beside him in the passenger seat sat Molly, refusing to stay behind despite his strict orders. In her lap, she clutched Piper’s discarded red ribbon, pressing it against her lips like a lifeline.

""You shouldn't have come,"" Gabriel said without taking his eyes off the blizzard. ""If things turn bloody, I cannot guarantee your safety.""

""She’s my daughter, Mr. Rourke,"" Molly said, her voice shaking with adrenaline yet burning with an unyielding maternal fire. ""And from what I’ve seen tonight, you loved your wife just as fiercely. We are both fighting for the only pieces of our souls we have left.""

Gabriel shifted down as the SUV crested a desolate hill. In the distance, silhouetted against the dark water, stood the blackened, skeletal remains of the lakeside estate. Three years ago, it had been a glorious stone-and-timber sanctuary where Audrey spent her weekends rehabilitating domestic abuse survivors. Tonight, it looked like a charred tomb rising from the frozen earth.

""Tell me about the fire,"" Molly urged quietly, needing to understand the trap they were walking into. ""Why did you blame yourself?""

Gabriel’s fingers tightened on the leather steering wheel. ""Audrey uncovered a series of shell companies registered under our charity. She confronted me that night. She threw documents in my face, screaming that I was washing blood money through orphanages and shelters. I was arrogant. I thought she was being hysterical. I told her to stay out of my business and walked away. Two hours later, the main lodge exploded. The fire chief told me it was an electrical surge caused by faulty industrial heaters. I buried her in a closed casket. The guilt... it felt like swallowing broken glass every single day.""

""And Evan?"" Molly asked, her heart hammering. ""Evan was an external auditor. He was hired six months ago by an anonymous board member to reconcile those exact accounts.""

""Which means Walter hired your husband to find the discrepancy, used Evan to locate the evidence Audrey had hidden before she died, and then staged Evan’s car crash the moment he delivered the file,"" Gabriel deduced, the pieces falling together with sickening clarity. ""Walter didn't just steal from me; he used our grief as a smoke screen.""

Gabriel killed the headlights half a mile from the estate gate, gliding the heavy vehicle into a grove of weeping willows. He reached into the glove compartment, pulled out a custom Kimber .45 pistol, checked the chamber with a crisp metallic snap, and handed a smaller snub-nosed revolver to Molly.

""Do you know how to use this?"" he asked.

""My father was a state trooper,"" Molly said, her grip firm despite her trembling hands. ""Safety is off. Point and squeeze.""

""Good,"" Gabriel murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with genuine respect. ""Stay three paces behind me. Step where I step. If Walter shoots, drop to the snow. I will draw his fire.""

They moved through the swirling snow like phantoms. The smell of old charred pine still lingered in the frigid air, cutting through the frost. As they approached the skeletal main entrance, the yellow glow of an industrial lantern illuminated the cavernous, roofless living room.

In the center of the ruins, sitting on a rusted iron patio chair, was Walter Pike, draped in a luxurious cashmere overcoat. And standing beside him, shivering in her thin red dress, was Piper. Behind Walter stood three heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear, their assault rifles raised at the low-ready position.

""Mister Gabe!"" Piper’s small voice pierced the freezing wind. ""Mommy!""

""Quiet, child,"" Walter snapped, his hand gripping her small shoulder with cruel force. He looked up into the darkness, smiling at the crunch of approaching boots. ""Right on time, Gabriel. I always admired your punctuality.""
