Chapter 9 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The following afternoon, Patricia waited until my car pulled out of the driveway before giving Kyle the signal to proceed. Believing the house was completely empty and that they had the perfect window of opportunity, Kyle crept into the utility crawlspace beneath the house armed with a heavy pipe wrench and a crowbar. With calculated malice, he wrenched open the emergency high-pressure bypass valve, deliberately disabling the pressure relief mechanism. Upstairs in the master bathroom, Brittany stood guard while Patricia used a steel pry bar to fracture the main copper intake line behind the imported marble soaking tub, intending to let dozens of gallons of pressurized water tear through the ceiling and destroy the high-end server racks in the office below.

Just as the first blast of high-pressure water erupted from the cracked pipe, spraying against the bathroom walls, the sharp wail of a commercial intrusion siren tore through the house. The heavy electronic deadbolts on all exterior doors slammed shut simultaneously, locked down by the smart security system I controlled remotely from my phone. Before Patricia or Brittany could even scream, the front door was breached with a deafening crack. Six armed officers from the local police tactical unit, accompanied by two county building inspectors and Marcus Vance holding a court-ordered felony arrest warrant, swarmed into the foyer. ""Police department! Put your hands in the air and step away from the plumbing immediately!"" an officer roared, his weapon drawn.

Patricia shrieked, dropping the crowbar onto the wet tile as water soaked through her designer sneakers. Kyle came scrambling out of the crawlspace hatch covered in dirt and grease, only to be tackled onto the hardwood floor by two officers and instantly pinned in handcuffs. ""What is the meaning of this?!"" Patricia wailed, her voice cracking into pure hysteria as she was shoved against the wall and cuffed behind her back. ""We're the victims here! The pipes burst accidentally! Alex set us up! He's trying to kill us!"" The lead detective held up a tablet displaying a crystal-clear, high-definition recording of their conversation from the previous night, complete with Kyle explicitly detailing how he was going to destroy the house and Patricia laughing about defrauding the insurance company.

""Mrs. Reynolds, you and your children are under arrest for felony conspiracy, commercial sabotage, and attempted insurance fraud exceeding five hundred thousand dollars,"" the detective stated with cold finality. As they were dragged down the front walkway in full view of every neighbor on Oakwood Drive, I stepped out of the back of a black sedan parked at the curb. Patricia looked at me with bloodshot, wild eyes, screaming every profanity in her vocabulary, begging me to call off the police, then cursing my name to the heavens. Kyle hung his head in absolute, humiliating defeat, unable to meet my eyes, while Brittany sobbed so hard she could barely walk. They were loaded into the backs of separate patrol cruisers and driven away, their reign of arrogance terminated forever.
