Chapter 6 - Chores and Consequences

By nightfall, the power dynamic in the house had completely inverted. Patricia and my father had spent five agonizing hours dragging their heavy dressers and clothing racks down into the damp, unfinished basement, while professional movers set up my king-sized bed, dual-monitor workstation, and custom lounge furniture in the sprawling master bedroom suite overlooking the swimming pool. Kyle and Brittany were forced to clean the entire ground floor under the watchful eye of Marcus Vance’s assistant, scrubbing the very baseboards they had spent years ordering me to clean. Every time Patricia tried to utter a complaint, I simply tapped the clipboard hanging by the refrigerator, which contained the Phoenix Holdings Tenant Rules and Regulations.

""Rule number four,"" I announced calmly the following evening as the family sat around the kitchen island, staring at cheap instant noodles while I enjoyed a dinner prepared by a private catering service. ""All common areas must be sanitized by nine PM. Rule number seven: quiet hours begin at ten PM sharp. Anyone causing a disturbance will receive a formal citation. Three citations mean eviction. Kyle, your car is currently leaking transmission fluid on the driveway pavers. That is citation number one."" Kyle slammed his fork down, his eyes bulging with resentment. ""It’s a minor leak! You can't write me up for that, you psycho!"" I looked at him without blinking. ""Argue with the property manager again, and that becomes citation number two for hostile tenant behavior. Clean the driveway, Kyle. Now.""

Gritting his teeth so hard I could hear the enamel grind, Kyle grabbed a bucket, degreaser, and a scrub brush, heading outside into the chilly evening air to scrub oil stains under the watchful eyes of Mrs. Henderson and the neighbors across the street. The whispers around the neighborhood had already begun to shift. People were noticing that the arrogant Reynolds boy was out doing manual labor, while Alex—the quiet nerd who was supposedly being kicked out—was being driven around in executive town cars and giving orders to high-priced attorneys. Brittany was forced to take a grueling morning shift at the local coffee shop just to contribute her share of the four-thousand-dollar monthly rent, coming home with swollen feet and stained aprons, crying into her pillow every single night.

My father spent his evenings sitting quietly on the back patio steps, staring blankly at the lawn he used to pride himself on maintaining. One night, as I walked out to inspect the pool filtration system, he looked up at me with sunken, sorrowful eyes. ""Alex... how did this happen?"" he asked, his voice trembling with genuine despair. ""How did we end up tenants in our own house? Who is Phoenix Holdings? Why are they doing this to us?"" I paused by the edge of the water, watching the moonlight ripple across the surface, feeling a momentary pang of sadness for the broken man before me. ""They aren't doing anything to you, Dad,"" I replied softly. ""They're just holding up a mirror to the choices you made. You allowed cruelty to rule this house for eight years. Now, accountability has come to collect the bill.""
