Chapter 5 - The Master of the House

The ink on the lease agreement was barely dry when Tuesday morning arrived with another monumental surprise. At nine sharp, a fleet of high-end commercial moving vans pulled up to the curb of 2847 Oakwood Drive, followed closely by an imposing black luxury SUV with tinted windows. Patricia rushed to the front window, adjusting her hair, assuming that the wealthy corporate executives of Phoenix Holdings had arrived to survey their new acquisition. She opened the front door with a wide, fake socialite smile plastered across her face, ready to charm whoever stepped out. But when the back door of the SUV opened, Marcus Vance stepped out—flanked by two movers carrying heavy mahogany executive furniture, high-end computer servers, and designer wardrobe trunks.

""Good morning, Mrs. Reynolds,"" Marcus said crisply, adjusting his tailored Italian suit. ""I am Marcus Vance, chief legal counsel for Phoenix Holdings LLC. I am here to formally install the company's designated on-site property manager, as outlined in Section 14, Clause B of your signed lease agreement."" Patricia clapped her hands together in performative delight. ""Wonderful! We have a lovely guest room over the garage that he can use. Where is he?"" Marcus didn't smile. He stepped aside and gestured toward the front porch. I walked out of the foyer, dressed in a tailored charcoal blazer, holding the master deed and the original brass keys to the entire estate in my hand.

""The property manager is already here, Patricia,"" I said calmly, looking her dead in the eye. ""And I won't be staying over the garage. As the designated managing authority of Phoenix Holdings, I am taking the master bedroom suite on the second floor. You and Robert have until five o'clock tonight to move your belongings into the basement guest room."" Patricia’s jaw dropped so low she looked like a gargoyle. Kyle burst out of the hallway, his fists clenched, his face flushed with rage. ""Are you insane, nerd?!"" Kyle screamed, charging toward me. ""You think you can kick my mom out of her bedroom?! I'll beat you into the pavement!""

Before Kyle could take another step, Marcus Vance stepped smoothly into his path, holding up a certified court document bearing the county sheriff's official stamp. ""Mr. Kyle Reynolds, if you lay a single finger on the corporate representative, you will be arrested for felony assault and trespassing on commercial corporate property within ten minutes. Furthermore, any act of violence constitutes an immediate, non-negotiable breach of lease, resulting in the instant eviction of your entire family by the armed deputies waiting at the end of the street."" Kyle froze mid-stride, his chest heaving, his fists shaking with impotent fury. Patricia’s eyes darted between Marcus, the legal papers, and my cold, unyielding stare. The realization that their despised stepson held absolute, legal power over their very existence hit her like a sledgehammer, turning her face from crimson rage to utter, sickening dread.
