Chapter 9 - The Hudson Spire Confrontation

At 4:45 a.m., the top floor of the Hudson Spire was wrapped in the cold blue light of early dawn. Victor Vance stood behind his sprawling mahogany desk, sipping single malt whiskey while watching the morning financial tickers scroll across a wall of flat-screen monitors.

His private phone buzzed on the blotter.

Vance smiled, picking it up. "Is it done? Is Moretti finished?"

"Not quite, Victor," Adrien’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and dangerously calm.

Vance froze, his glass hovering inches from his lips. "Adrien?"

The heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open off their hinges. Marcus Hail and six heavily armed tactical officers from Ortiz’s federal unit flooded the room, their weapon lights painting red dots across Vance's chest.

Behind them walked Adrien Moretti, spotless in a fresh tailored charcoal suit, accompanied by Clare Bennett.

"Put the glass down, Vance," Detective Ortiz ordered, stepping into the office with an arrest warrant in hand. "Your offshore accounts have been frozen, your contractor is in federal custody singing a full confession, and Daniel Mercer just turned state's evidence on your corporate sabotage scheme."

Victor Vance slowly lowered his glass, his eyes wild with desperate rage as he stared at the billionaire boss. "You think you’ve won, Moretti? You’re a relic of the old world. Your family was supposed to burn with that building!"

"My family built this city," Adrien replied, stepping forward until he stood directly across the desk from his lifelong rival. "And you made the fatal mistake of threatening someone under my protection."

Vance’s gaze darted to Clare, his sneer twisting with spite. "Her? You risked your entire empire for a common assistant?"

"She isn't just an assistant," Adrien said, his voice ringing with absolute authority that silenced the entire room. "She is the sharpest mind in this city. And as of this morning, she is the newly appointed Vice President of Corporate Security and Operations for Moretti Global."

Vance looked between them, speechless, before Ortiz shoved him against the glass desk and snapped heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. "Victor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud."

As Vance was dragged out of his luxury penthouse in chains, screaming curses into the corridor, Clare turned to Adrien with wide eyes.

"Vice President of Operations?" she asked, half-laughing, half-shocked. "Mr. Moretti, we haven't discussed a contract, a salary, or even job responsibilities."

Adrien turned to her, his hard expression completely transforming into something radiant, admiring, and unmistakably tender. "You saved my life twice, dismantled an international assassination plot in less than twenty-four hours, and outsmarted the deadliest marksman in Eastern Europe. If anything, Vice President is a demotion."

He offered his arm to her, and this time, Clare slipped her hand into his elbow without a second thought.

"Come on," Adrien said softly. "Let's go home. You have an elderly cat who is very angry about breakfast."
