Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Water

They threw themselves across the twin steel rails an instant before the express train roared past, the deafening wall of iron and wind obliterating all sight and sound. The suction pulled violently at their clothes, but Adrien dragged Clare into a recessed maintenance nook on the opposite wall, shielding her entire body with his own.

Behind the rushing blur of train cars, muzzle flashes bloomed from the far tunnel platform as the pursuer fired blindly. But the train acted as an impenetrable moving shield, absorbing the stray lead with screeching metallic sparks.

By the time the final car rattled into the darkness, Adrien and Clare were already disappearing up an old emergency escape ladder leading to a street-level grate on Park Avenue.

Adrien pushed the heavy cast-iron cover upward, scanning the street. Rain had begun to fall, slicking the empty pavement in mirrors of yellow streetlamp light. A nondescript black town car pulled smoothly to the curb, its hazard lights blinking twice.

The passenger door swung open to reveal Marcus Hail behind the wheel, his face smudged with soot and a bandage plastered over his temple. "Get in! Quick!"

Adrien shoved Clare into the leather backseat, sliding in right behind her and slamming the heavy door. The car surged forward into the rainy Manhattan night.

"Status on the brownstone?" Adrien demanded, catching his breath.

"Three attackers neutralized, two in custody," Marcus reported through the rearview mirror. "Police are locking down the entire block. But boss, Vance isn't playing by city rules anymore. He’s hired a rogue mercenary crew—former Spetsnaz contract operators. The sniper who took the shot this morning is an operative known only as The Ghost."

Clare leaned forward, wiping rain from her brow. "The man at the reception desk had a scar running through his left eyebrow and spoke with a slight Baltic cadence. He asked for black coffee with three sugars. He had calluses on the inside of his thumb and forefinger—consistent with long-range marksmen."

Marcus whistled softly. "A photographic ear and eye. You’re incredible, Clare."

"She’s indispensable," Adrien corrected quietly, his hand finding hers on the leather seat between them. His fingers curled around hers, warm and protective, and for the first time, Clare didn't pull away.

"Where are we heading?" she asked, looking at their joined hands.

"A private marina in Brooklyn," Adrien said. "I have an offshore yacht anchored in international waters past Long Island. Vance’s political connections end at the state line. You’ll be safe there until my teams dismantle his entire operation."

"And what about you?" she asked, sensing the omission in his words.

Adrien looked out into the rain-slicked night, his jaw set in stone. "I am going to end Victor Vance once and for all."

"No," Clare said firmly, squeezing his hand. "You're not walking into a trap without me. Vance knows you’ll come for him. The only way you survive this is if we use his own surveillance against him."

Adrien turned to her, his gaze searching. "What do you mean?"

"The transceiver in your boardroom wasn't just a trigger," Clare said, her mind piecing together the acoustic puzzle. "It was an open audio transmitter. Vance is listening to every move we make right now."
