Chapter 4 - Under Watchful Eyes

The revelation that she had a multimillion-dollar price on her head hung in the air like poison. Clare felt the blood drain from her face, though she refused to allow her hands to tremble.

"Victor Vance has been trying to carve out our shipping terminals along the Hudson for five years," Adrien said, pacing the room like a caged panther. "He knew that taking me out would leave the Moretti family fractured. But now that you’ve exposed his inside man and disrupted the assassination, he views you as a primary threat to his entire network."

"I am an administrator, Mr. Moretti," Clare said, her voice rising slightly. "I don't have underworld armies. I don't own offshore accounts. Why spend resources hunting a secretary?"

"Because you can identify the contractor," Adrien explained, turning to face her. "You saw his face at the reception desk. You wrote his name down. You know his gait, his height, his voice. You’re the only person alive who can connect Vance’s contract killer to the corporate infiltration."

Without warning, the townhouse’s perimeter lights flickered once and plunged into darkness. An ominous, low siren began to wail through the reinforced walls as the emergency generator hummed to life, bathing the room in an eerie red glow.

"Breach at the rear carriage house!" Marcus’s voice crackled through Adrien’s tactical earpiece. "Perimeter sensors tripped! Optical feeds are jammed with white noise—boss, they’re inside the perimeter!"

Adrien didn't hesitate. In a single fluid motion, he pulled a concealed handgun from an under-desk holster, chambered a round, and grabbed Clare’s wrist, pulling her behind him. "Stay on my heels. Don't look back."

"Where are we going?" she whispered, the adrenaline flooding her veins again.

"The old carriage cellar," Adrien whispered back. "There’s a fortified panic vault that leads to the subway tunnel line."

Gunfire erupted from the ground floor below—muffled, rhythmic bursts of suppressed automatic weapons. The Vance syndicate wasn't waiting for a trial; they had dispatched a clean-up squad to obliterate everyone in the house before the police could intervene.

Adrien navigated the dim back stairs with lethal efficiency. As they reached the foot of the stone cellar steps, a shadow moved in the doorway ahead. A masked operative in tactical combat gear stepped forward, his rifle raising directly toward Clare.

Before the shooter could squeeze the trigger, Adrien fired twice. The operative collapsed to the stone floor with a dull thud.

Clare gasped, pressing her back against the damp brick wall. Adrien immediately turned to her, his hands gripping her shoulders, checking her eyes for shock. "Are you with me, Clare?"

She took a sharp, steadying breath, forced her heart rate down, and nodded. "I'm with you. But listen."

Adrien froze, trusting her ears instantly. "What do you hear?"

"Two men coming down the service chute from the kitchen," Clare whispered, pointing toward a heavy iron ventilation duct near the ceiling. "Their boots are heavy—rubber soles on iron grating. They’re thirty feet away and moving fast."

Adrien looked up at the duct, then glanced at Clare with fierce admiration. "You are an absolute marvel, Miss Bennett."

He raised his weapon, aimed at the thin sheet-metal junction of the duct, and waited for her signal.
