Chapter 5 - The Subway Escape

"Now," Clare whispered.

Adrien fired four rapid shots straight through the ceiling panel. A muffled scream echoed from inside the duct, followed by the heavy crash of dead weight collapsing against the iron baffles. The second pursuer scrambled backward in panic, shouting frantic orders in Russian over a crackling radio.

"Move!" Adrien commanded, taking Clare by the hand. He led her through a concealed iron door behind an old wine rack, sliding a three-inch steel bolt into place behind them just as bullets began slamming against the exterior wood.

They were in a narrow, damp tunnel that sloped downward into the cool earth. The distant rumble of the Lexington Avenue subway line reverberated through the stone floor.

"This passage was sealed in 1932," Adrien explained as they moved swiftly along the brick-lined corridor illuminated only by the tactical light attached to his weapon. "It leads to an abandoned maintenance platform between 68th and 77th Street."

"Where are your men?" Clare asked, struggling to match his long, hurried strides.

"Marcus is holding the front courtyard to draw their fire. He has a fully armored extraction van waiting two blocks north. Our priority is getting you out of this quadrant before Vance seals the borough bridges."

As they reached the rusted iron grate overlooking the darkened subway tunnel, the sound of an approaching train rumbled in the distance. The wind pushed a blast of warm, ozone-scented air through the bars.

Adrien used a heavy iron pry bar stashed in an alcove to lever the gate open. He stepped out onto the narrow concrete ledge beside the active tracks, then reached out to catch Clare as she climbed through.

His hands rested securely on her waist as he lifted her down. For a heartbeat, their faces were inches apart in the shadows of the subterranean cavern. Clare could feel the frantic heat of his chest against hers, the raw adrenaline crackling between them.

"You're remarkably brave for someone who claims she's just an administrator," Adrien murmured, his voice husky against the rushing wind.

"I'm terrified, actually," Clare confessed, looking directly into his piercing gray eyes. "I'm just very good at compartmentalizing."

A sudden sound cut through the darkness behind them—the squeal of rusted hinges back at the tunnel entrance. The second operative had managed to breach the wine cellar door.

"They found the tunnel," Clare warned, her sharp ears catching the click of a fresh magazine being loaded into a rifle.

Adrien pulled her against the recessed wall of the tunnel as headlights illuminated the curve ahead. A late-night express train was barreling toward them at fifty miles per hour.

"When I say jump, we cross the tracks to the service alcove on the far side," Adrien instructed, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist. "If we miscalculate the timing, the train kills us. If we stay here, Vance's men finish us."

Clare looked at the roaring metal monster bearing down on them, then looked at Adrien. "Count of three?"

"Count of two," Adrien corrected, pulling her taut. "One... two... NOW!"
