Chapter 9 - The Shadows Recede

A month after the federal charges against the Cornero family collapsed under the weight of the leaked whistleblower files, Arthur made a decision that shocked the criminal underworld.

He called an assembly of all syndicate leaders at a neutral luxury hotel in Midtown. With Norah standing beside him, wearing a tailored navy suit that mirrored the very first room she had walked into, Arthur officially dissolved the Cornero crime syndicate. The illegal territories were surrendered, the violent assets liquidated, and the entire capital converted into Cornero Global Logistics—a legitimate shipping, freight, and investment conglomerate.

""Any man who wishes to remain in the shadows may leave,"" Arthur declared to the stunned room of capos. ""Any man who stays will draw a clean paycheck, pay his taxes, and report to Miss Hayes. The era of blood is over.""

That evening, the penthouse on the forty-fourth floor was finally complete.

The heavy blackout curtains that had hung like a funeral shroud for two years were gone. In their place hung sheer linen drapes that let in the brilliant, fiery hues of the Manhattan sunset. The navy carpet had been replaced with warm, polished blonde hardwood. The stale smell of cigars and bitter coffee was replaced by the fresh aroma of white lilies and ocean air.

Arthur stood in the center of the room. He took fourteen steps toward the west wall. But this time, he didn't stop in the dark. He reached out and felt the warm sunlight radiating through the glass.

Norah walked in, her low heels clicking softly against the wood. She held two cups of coffee from a small local bakery downstairs.

Arthur turned his head. A soft, genuine smile—one that had never been seen by his enemies—graced his lips. ""You walk differently now,"" he said.

""How?"" she asked, handing him his cup.

""With certainty,"" he replied, taking the warm porcelain. He set it on the sill, reached out, and pulled her gently against his chest. ""No more counting steps in the dark.""

""I have an announcement,"" Norah said, looking up at him, her heart beating a steady, joyful rhythm. ""Dr. Bradley called from Johns Hopkins. The preliminary scans of your optic nerve from last week's specialist consultation came back.""

Arthur went still. ""And?""

""The nerve damage wasn't total, Arthur. The burns scarred the tissue, but the experimental surgical procedure they've been testing... it has an eighty percent success rate. You could regain your sight.""

Arthur was silent for a long moment. He reached up, his fingers gently tracing the contour of her brow, the curve of her nose, and the softness of her lips.

May you like

""I don't need to see the world, Norah,"" he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. ""I only want to see you.""

""Then let them do the surgery,"" she whispered, her eyes shining with tears of hope. ""Because I'm tired of describing this view to you. I want you to see it with me.""
