Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Shadows

The purge of Moretti’s loyalists took forty-eight hours, but the aftermath left deep fractures within the Cornero syndicate. While Arthur’s iron grip on the underworld was restored with terrifying efficiency, the traditional capos—old men who had sworn oaths in blood forty years ago—did not look kindly upon Norah Hayes.

""She’s an outsider, Arthur,"" Capo Sal Valenti growled during an emergency council meeting at the Brooklyn warehouse. The air was thick with the stench of salt water and diesel. ""A common girl off the street. An agency temp! You’re sharing the family's books with a woman who doesn't even have our blood in her veins. She knows too much.""

Arthur sat at the head of the rusted metal table, his long fingers drumming a slow, menacing cadence. ""Miss Hayes has saved this family fifty million dollars and exposed the traitor you all failed to catch. If any man in this room questions her presence again, I will cut out his tongue and feed it to the gulls in the harbor.""

Valenti swallowed hard, looking down at his cigar, but the hatred in his eyes lingered.

Back at the penthouse, which was undergoing extensive renovations, Norah spent her evenings in the private library on the upper level. Arthur had bought her a brand-new laptop, but she preferred cross-referencing paper receipts. Yet, beneath her stoic exterior, the weight of this dangerous new reality was beginning to erode her composure.

She stood on the balcony overlooking the shimmering lights of Manhattan, wrapped in an oversized cashmere sweater Arthur had bought for her. The winter wind whipped her hair across her face.

Footsteps approached. Slow, measured, perfectly familiar.

Arthur stopped beside her at the railing. He didn't lean over; he just stood facing the city, feeling the cold breeze against his face. ""You're thinking of leaving,"" he stated quietly.

Norah hugged her arms tighter. ""I'm a girl who couldn't afford her dental bills last month, Arthur. Now I'm sitting in rooms where men decide who lives and who dies over espresso. Yesterday, I found a tracking device taped to the undercarriage of my town car.""

""Vincent removed it. The man responsible will not breathe another sunrise.""

""That’s the problem!"" she said, her voice rising with sudden emotion. ""You solve everything with blood! I don't want you to become a monster just to keep me alive. I survived twenty-six years on grit and cheap coffee. But being with you... it terrifies me, Arthur. Not because I'm afraid of what you'll do to me. I'm afraid of what they will do to you to get to me.""

Arthur turned, reaching blindly until his hands found her shoulders. He pulled her against him with a fierce, unyielding grip. ""Let them try,"" he rasped, burying his face in the crook of her neck. ""Before you walked into my dark office, Norah, I was already dead. I was a ghost counting fourteen steps between my desk and the wall, waiting for an assassin to put me out of my misery. You gave me back my sight. You gave me a reason to fight.""

Tears slipped down Norah’s cheeks, hot against the winter chill. She looked up at him—this ruthless, feared tyrant who ruled an empire, kneeling in spirit before her.

""Don't make promises you can't keep,"" she whispered.

""I don't make promises,"" Arthur said, his lips claiming hers in a kiss that was desperate, wild, and filled with a raw, undeniable hunger. ""I execute decrees.""
