Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Cup

The threat did not come from a bullet or an explosion. It came wrapped in silver and porcelain.

Two weeks before Christmas, the Cornero syndicate hosted an intimate dinner for the remaining family capos at Arthur's private townhouse in Gramercy Park. The tensions were simmering, but Arthur intended to solidify a new council structure, placing Vincent as underboss and establishing a legitimate corporate logistics arm that would phase out the cartel's violent street operations—a plan drafted entirely by Norah.

Norah sat at Arthur’s right hand at the head of the grand dining table. The old capos glared at her across the silver candelabras, but none dared speak.

""To the future of the family,"" Capo Sal Valenti declared, raising a crystal goblet of vintage Barolo. ""And to Don Cornero’s health.""

Arthur reached for his glass, his fingers curling around the crystal stem. He raised it toward his lips.

Norah glanced down at her own glass, then over at Arthur’s. She noticed a faint, iridescent sheen on the surface of the dark red wine, catching the candlelight in an unnatural swirl. Beneath the rich aroma of fermented grapes and oak, a microscopic, bitter scent of crushed almonds drifted into the air.

Her instincts—honed by years of surviving the worst corners of New York—screamed.

""Stop!"" Norah shouted, smacking the glass from Arthur’s hand.

The crystal shattered across the table, splattering dark red wine across the white linen. Where the liquid soaked into the cloth, the fabric began to discolour strangely, smoking faintly under the heat of the candles.

Arthur surged to his feet, overturning his heavy carved chair. ""Nobody moves!"" Vincent roared, drawing his weapon as the dining room erupted into chaos.

Valenti backed away toward the kitchen door, his face pale with panic. ""She’s crazy! The bitch is hallucinating!""

""Cyanide,"" Norah said, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she pointed at the smoking linen. ""He put potassium cyanide in your glass. Smell it! It smells like bitter almonds!""

Arthur didn't need to smell it. He heard the frantic, irregular heartbeat of Sal Valenti. He stepped around the table with terrifying speed. Valenti lunged for the service exit, but Arthur caught him by the throat, slamming him against the mahogany sideboard with enough force to shatter the fine china.

""You dared,"" Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with pure demonic fury. ""In my home. At my table. In front of my woman.""

""Arthur, please!"" Valenti gagged, clawing at Arthur's iron fingers. ""The Russians offered ten million! They said you were weak—that you let a whore run the family!""

""She is not a whore,"" Arthur hissed into the old man's ear. ""She is your queen.""

With a brutal twist, Arthur threw Valenti to the floor at Vincent’s feet. ""Take him to the harbor. Ensure he takes a very long swim.""

As the guards dragged the screaming traitor away, Arthur turned toward Norah. His chest was heaving. He crossed the room, pulling her trembling body into his arms. She buried her face in his suit, the shock finally catching up to her. He held her tight, his hand stroking her hair, repeating low, soothing words in Italian that she couldn't understand, but whose meaning was unmistakable: You are safe. I will burn the world before I let them touch you.
