Chapter 3 - Ambush in the Dark

The explosion hit at 6:15 PM, just as the cleaning crews entered the lower levels. The blast rocked the skyscraper, blowing out the thick glass panels along the eastern corridor. Alarms shrieked, water sprinklers hissed to life from the ceiling, and the backup generators failed instantly, plunging the entire floor into pitch-black darkness.
Screams echoed down the hallway, followed by the deafening roar of automatic gunfire.
Norah was thrown against the mahogany credenza, her head striking the wood. She gasped, dazed, coughing as toxic drywall dust filled the air. Darkness enveloped her—thick, suffocating, absolute. She couldn't see her hands in front of her face. Panic, sharp and primal, clawed at her throat. ""Arthur?"" she called out, her voice breaking through the coughing fit.
Heavy footsteps pounded outside. Men shouting in Italian. The kick of boots against mahogany doors.
Suddenly, a warm, massive hand clamped over her mouth. A strong arm banded around her waist, lifting her effortlessly from the floor and pulling her into the dead space between the bookcase and the structural pillar.
""Quiet,"" Arthur’s voice vibrated directly against her ear. It was calm. Eerily, terrifyingly calm.
Norah struggled to breathe through his fingers. While she was blind, paralyzed by the absence of light, Arthur Cornero was finally on his home turf. For two years, he had lived in this darkness. He knew every grain of the wood, every tile on the floor, every inch of the fourteen steps across the expanse.
""There are four of them,"" Arthur whispered into her hair, his breath warm against her temple. ""Carrying submachine guns. High-caliber. Their boots are steel-toed; they echo too loudly. Stay behind this pillar. If you move, I will not be able to protect you.""
The heavy double doors splintered inward with a loud crash. Beams of tactical flashlights swept through the dust, cutting white swaths through the gloom.
""Check the desk!"" a gruff voice barked. ""The blind bastard can't run. Moretti wants his head on a spike before the feds show up!""
Arthur didn't use a gun. A firearm would create a muzzle flash, giving away his position to the tactical lights. Instead, he stepped out from the shadows like a phantom born of the night. Norah crouched low, straining her eyes, seeing only the wild sweeps of flashlight beams and hearing the sudden, visceral symphony of violence.
A sharp snap of bone. A choked cry cut short. The sound of a tactical light shattering on the marble floor.
""Where is he?! He’s behind the—""
A heavy body slammed against the wall with enough force to rattle the plaster. Another burst of blind gunfire peppered the ceiling, raining down sparks and burning tiles, but Arthur was already gone, flowing through the dark like smoke. He moved silently, guided by the sound of their ragged breathing and the clatter of their tactical vests. Within forty-five seconds, three men were on the floor, unmoving.
The fourth man, panicking, spun his flashlight toward the corner where Norah was hiding. The beam caught her eyes, blinding her. ""Got your whore!"" the gunman screamed, raising his weapon.
Before his finger could squeeze the trigger, a dark shadow descended. Arthur’s arm locked around the man's throat from behind, twisting with surgical, lethal precision. The gunman dropped like a stone.
Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the hiss of water and Norah’s ragged breaths.
Arthur stood in the center of the carnage, his expensive suit jacket torn, blood smeared across his right knuckles. He turned his head toward her. Even without sight, he locked onto her location instantly. He crossed the floor with swift, confident strides and knelt before her, his hands framing her face, searching for cuts, feverishly checking her pulse.
""Are you bleeding?"" he demanded, his voice laced with an intensity that bordered on fury. ""Norah. Answer me.""

""I'm... I'm okay,"" she choked out, her trembling hands instinctively clutching his forearms, feeling the hard muscle beneath the fabric. ""Arthur, you... you fought them in the dark.""
""The dark belongs to me,"" he said fiercely, pulling her against his chest. For the first time, the cold mob boss held her with desperate, possessive warmth. ""And so do you.""
