Chapter 6 - An Unlikely Ally

By midnight, Hail Tower was locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary.

Word had spread through the ranks like wildfire: Arthur Bennett, the grand architect of the syndicate's finance, was being held in chains at the docks, and the quiet pastry chef in the basement kitchen was Rose Hail, the lost daughter of the founding family.

Inside Vincent’s penthouse suite on the 36th floor, Emma was fast asleep on an oversized velvet sofa, wrapped in a cashmere throw with a half-eaten gingerbread man resting on a napkin beside her.

Rachel sat at Vincent’s massive mahogany desk, her hands wrapped around a mug of hot tea that Thomas had brought her with shaking, apologetic hands.

""I should have known, Miss Rose,"" Thomas had whispered an hour earlier, bowing his head until his chin touched his chest. ""When your father died, Arthur seized the family records. I suspected something was wrong with the accident in Lincoln, but I was terrified for Master Vincent’s life. I stayed silent to keep him alive.""

""You protected him, Thomas,"" Rachel had replied softly. ""And you gave my daughter a chocolate button today. You don't owe me an apology.""

Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the harbor lights flicker against the black water of the Atlantic. His phone buzzed continuously on the desk, but he ignored every single call.

""The federal task force is already reviewing David's files,"" Vincent said, turning back toward her. ""Arthur’s private network had tentacles in the state police, the maritime union, and two city council seats. David wasn't just a reporter, Rachel. He was an assassin with a keyboard. He dismantled Arthur's entire money-laundering pipeline in sixteen months.""

A bitter tear slipped down Rachel’s cheek. ""David always believed the truth mattered. Even when we couldn't pay our heating bill in Oregon, he told me that exposing the men who operate in the shadows was the only way to build a world safe enough for Emma."" She looked up at Vincent. ""He died because he was trying to protect people from your family.""

Vincent flinched, the guilt settling deep into the lines of his face. ""I know. And there is nothing I can do to bring him back. But I will tear down every single wall Arthur built with that blood money. The shell companies, the illegal docks, the kickback schemes—I am handing every document over to the United States Attorney tomorrow morning.""

Rachel studied him carefully. ""If you do that, Vincent... what happens to you?""

""I’ll face whatever charges stick to my name,"" Vincent said without hesitation. ""I spent fifteen years getting my hands dirty because I thought power was the only thing that could find you. If the price for finding you is a prison cell, I’ll walk into it tomorrow.""

Before Rachel could answer, the elevator doors at the end of the corridor chimed with an urgent, harsh chime.

Marco rushed into the room, his jacket torn at the shoulder, breathing heavily.

""Boss,"" Marco gasped, clutching his side. ""We have a situation at Terminal 4.""

Vincent’s posture snapped from grieving brother to lethal commander in half a second. ""What happened?""

""Arthur’s loyalists,"" Marco said through gritted teeth. ""He had a secondary offshore mercenary crew stationed in Rhode Island. They hit the terminal twenty minutes ago with suppressors and smoke grenades. They extracted Arthur. They’re heading toward Logan Airport.""

Rachel stood up instantly, her maternal instincts screaming as she instinctively stepped between the open room and the sofa where Emma slept.

Vincent’s eyes darkened into pure slate. He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out two heavy magazines and snapping one into his sidearm.

""He’s not reaching an airplane,"" Vincent said, his voice flat and terrifying. ""Marco, lock down the tunnel. Rosie, stay here with Thomas.""

""No,"" Rachel said, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor.

Vincent stopped, looking back at her. ""Rosie, this is mob warfare. You stay with your daughter.""

""David died because Arthur Bennett was allowed to operate in the shadows,"" Rachel said, walking up to her brother, her eyes blazing with an unshakeable resolve. ""He tried to erase my childhood, and he murdered my husband. You are not going out there as a mafia boss settling a score. We are ending this together.""
