Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Arthur Bennett

The silence in the dining room became suffocating. The two pieces of silver sat locked together in Vincent’s palm, gleaming under the chandelier.

Rachel stared at the joined pendant, her vision swimming. ""This... this doesn't prove anything. Someone could have sold it. Someone could have stolen it.""

""Nobody stole it,"" a smooth, cultured voice said from the doorway.

Arthur Bennett stood just inside the room, leaning lightly on his gold-topped walking cane. His silver hair was combed back with aristocratic precision, his charcoal three-piece suit without a wrinkle. Behind him stood two guards who did not answer to Vincent—men from the Hail Corporation's private trust division.

""Arthur,"" Vincent said, not turning his head, his eyes still glued to Rachel's pale face. ""You shouldn't be down here.""

""I heard there was a disturbance concerning the kitchen staff, Vincent,"" Arthur said mildly, stepping into the room. His cold blue eyes flicked to Rachel, lingering on her face, then dropping to the joined pendant in Vincent's hand. For a split second, a flicker of sheer, murderous panic flashed across the old man’s face before settling back into a benevolent mask. ""And I see you are once again torturing yourself with ghosts. Vincent, dear boy, how many times have we been down this road? Grifters, look-alikes, opportunists trying to claim the Hail family bloodline.""

""She didn't claim anything, Arthur,"" Vincent said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. ""Her daughter walked into my boardroom with a cake decorated with yellow roses. And she carries the second half of the swallow.""

Arthur offered a tragic, grandfatherly sigh. ""The harbor is full of scavengers who knew your father’s workshop, Vincent. When Rose disappeared twenty-five years ago, the estate was ransacked by looters during the police frenzy. Anyone could have found that broken scrap of silver.""

Rachel’s mind raced. Something about Arthur’s voice felt horribly, viscously familiar. Not from her adult life, but from a dark, suppressed drawer in her subconscious. The tone was warm, but underneath it lay the scent of expensive aftershave, cold leather car seats, and rain on a windshield.

‘Be quiet, Rosie. If you make a sound, your brother will never come home.’

A flash of raw memory struck Rachel like a physical blow. She staggered back against the mahogany sideboard, knocking over an empty wine glass that shattered across the parquet floor.

""Rachel!"" Vincent lunged forward, catching her arm before she fell.

His touch was firm, shockingly gentle for a man reputed to crush throat bones with his bare hands. She looked up into his gray eyes—eyes that suddenly mirrored the panic of an eleven-year-old boy screaming into the dark woods of Weston.

""Get away from her, Vincent,"" Arthur insisted, stepping forward, his cane clicking sharply against the floor. ""The woman is clearly unwell. Furthermore, our legal department flagged her this morning. She is the widow of David Carter, the hack journalist who harassed our logistics partners. She took a job here under false pretenses to plant spyware in our terminal relays. Security, take her down to holding.""

The two trust guards stepped into the room, their hands sliding beneath their suit jackets.

""Touch her,"" Vincent whispered, his voice turning into gravel, ""and you leave this room in pieces.""

The guards instantly froze. Nobody in the city of Boston disobeyed Vincent Hail when he spoke in that tone.

Arthur’s polite expression vanished, replaced by an icy, arrogant chill. ""You are letting sentimentality blind you to corporate survival, Vincent. I raised you. I preserved your father’s empire after that tragic crash on the Lincoln highway. If you let this unstable woman infiltrate our operations—""

""Who authorized the surveillance on David Carter?"" Vincent interrupted, turning fully toward his godfather. His eyes were burning with an inferno of realization. ""Dante told me this morning that the harbor investigation was flagged under a private security budget. A budget controlled exclusively by your office, Arthur.""

Arthur didn't flinch. ""I protect this family from parasites. Her husband was prying into transactions he had no business understanding. He was an amateur playing with industrial machinery.""

""He was murdered,"" Rachel spat out, her voice raw, pulling herself up against the sideboard. ""His brakes failed on Route 9! You killed him!""

""David Carter was reckless,"" Arthur replied coldly. ""Just like your parents were reckless on a rainy night twenty-five years ago.""

The room went dead silent.

Vincent’s breath hitched. ""What did you say?""
