Chapter 5 - Blood and Salt

The revelation froze Arthur in place.
""David was an investigative reporter, Arthur,"" Rachel said, her voice steady and lethal. ""He knew someone in the executive suite was hunting him. He knew that if he kept the backup drives in our apartment, they would disappear. So he encrypted the entire waterfront syndicate archive and uploaded it to a decentralized cloud partition. The access key isn't a password.""
She reached down, unbuttoning the small locket David had given her for their fifth anniversary, pulling out a microscopic micro-SD card disguised as a watch battery.
""It requires biometric authentication from David’s surviving immediate kin,"" Rachel said, her eyes locked on Arthur’s horrified face. ""Emma’s genetic profile unlocks the partition. Everything you buried—the wire transfers, the hit contracts, the staged car accidents, the payments to the St. Agnes director—it’s all there. Every single crime you committed to steal the Hail family legacy.""
Arthur’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. The aristocratic composure was gone, replaced by the cornered terror of a trapped rodent. ""Vincent... listen to me. If those files go public, the entire organization falls. The docks, the shipping lines, your family name—everything turns to ash. We can settle this. She’s your sister! We can give her half the empire!""
Vincent didn't lower the weapon. He turned his head slightly to look at Rachel.
For the first time in twenty-five years, he wasn't looking at a stranger, or a baker, or an intruder. He was looking into the eyes of the little girl whose fingers he had held in the Weston pinewoods. The little girl he had failed to protect.
""I spent twenty-five years building an empire so I would have the power to bring you home,"" Vincent whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable emotion. ""I don't give a damn if the empire burns to the ground, Rosie. Not if it means justice for you and your family.""
He turned back to Arthur.
""Marco,"" Vincent said without emotion.
""Yes, Boss?""
""Take him down to the salt cellars at Terminal 4. Strip his phones, his access badges, and his accounts. If he speaks, cut his tongue out. We wait until Dante coordinates with the federal prosecutor's office.""
""Vincent, no! You can't do this to me!"" Arthur shrieked as Marco and two massive dockworkers grabbed him by the arms, dragging his flailing, kicking body out of the dining room. ""I made you! You're nothing without me! You're just a broken boy crying in the woods!""
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off Arthur’s screams.
Silence returned to the room, heavy and sacred.
Vincent lowered his gun, clicking the safety back into place with trembling fingers. He tucked it into his holster, turned around, and looked at Rachel.
He looked completely undone. The feared mafia boss of Boston, the man who commanded hundreds of armed men and controlled the eastern seaboard’s most lucrative ports, looked like an exhausted, grieving child standing on the edge of a vast, empty forest.
""I let go of your hand,"" Vincent whispered, tears finally breaking free and running down his scarred cheeks. ""I heard a noise, and I let go of your hand.""
Rachel looked at the joined silver swallow resting on the white linen table. All the anger, all the grief for David, all the terrifying loneliness of a childhood spent wondering who she was, crashed over her in an overwhelming wave.
""You were eleven, Vincent,"" she choked out, stepping across the shattered glass.
May you like
Vincent broke. He reached out, his massive arms wrapping around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest as the sobs racked his body. Rachel buried her face into his tailored jacket, the faint scent of pine soap and expensive wool triggering the final, locked chamber of her childhood memory.
She was home.
