Chapter 4 - The Vault of Sins

Arthur Bennett realized his slip of the tongue a fraction of a second too late. His jaw tightened, and he took a half-step back toward the open doorway where his private guards stood poised.

""You said 'reckless',"" Vincent repeated, each syllable heavy enough to crack stone. ""The police report in 2001 stated my parents swerved to avoid a deer on a slick curve. You told me that yourself, Arthur. You held my hand at their funeral and told me it was an act of God.""

""It was an expression, Vincent,"" Arthur said smoothly, recovering his poise with terrifying speed. ""You are overwrought. You are seeing conspiracies in shadows because of a pastry cook and a silver trinket. We will resolve this internally.""

""No,"" Vincent said. ""We resolve this now.""

He reached behind his back, pulled a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from his holster, and leveled it directly at Arthur’s chest. The guards behind Arthur reached for their weapons, but before their hands could clear leather, the door behind them swung open violently.

Marco Rinaldi and three of Vincent’s waterfront lieutenants flooded the hallway, their weapons drawn and pressed against the necks of Arthur’s guards.

""Disarm them,"" Vincent commanded without breaking eye contact with his godfather.

Marco stripped the weapons from Arthur's men in three seconds flat, shoving them against the corridor wall.

""Vincent, you have lost your mind,"" Arthur hissed, his aristocratic veneer completely slipping away. ""I built this empire while you were still weeping into your pillow over your lost sister! You owe me everything!""

""Thomas,"" Vincent called out.

Thomas Keen stepped through the dining room doors, his face pale and lined with decades of silent guilt. He wasn't looking at Vincent. He was looking at Rachel, tears streaming openly down his aged cheeks.

""Tell him, Thomas,"" Vincent ordered quietly. ""Tell him what Dante found in the basement archives this morning.""

Thomas swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he pulled a faded, yellowed carbon-copy shipping manifest from an envelope. ""Twenty-five years ago... three days before Rose disappeared... Mr. Hail Senior discovered that Arthur was diverting arms shipments through the Weston rail depot under the family name. Mr. Hail threatened to go to the federal prosecutor.""

Rachel watched the two men, the room spinning around her. The pieces were connecting with brutal, horrifying clarity.

""Arthur didn't steal Rose for ransom,"" Rachel whispered, the memory unlocking inside her brain like a dam bursting under pressure. ""He took me to keep my father quiet.""

The memory was vivid now: the smell of the pinewoods, Vincent turning away to listen to a bird, and a hand with a heavy gold ring clamping over her mouth. The leather interior of a car. A man with silvering hair telling her that if she cried, her brother would die.

""He drove me across state lines,"" Rachel said, her voice shaking with righteous fury as she stared Arthur down. ""He dropped me at St. Agnes in Oregon. He paid the facility director to keep me off the adoption grid until the scandal blew over. But then... my parents died in that crash.""

""And Arthur didn't need a hostage anymore,"" Vincent finished, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. ""Did you, Arthur? Once my parents were dead, you became the sole executor of the Hail trust and my legal guardian. Bringing Rose back would have meant questions. It would have meant DNA tests. It would have meant an audit.""

Arthur gave a cold, dry chuckle that echoed sickeningly against the mahogany walls. ""Your father was a weak fool, Vincent. He thought you could run a billion-dollar waterfront empire with clean hands and Sunday school morals! He was going to destroy everything his ancestors built over a few crates of surplus rifles! I saved this family!""

""You scattered my sister to an orphanage,"" Vincent roared, his composure shattering as he stepped forward, slamming Arthur against the wall with his left hand while the gun remained steady between the old man's eyes. ""You let me spend twenty-five years searching every gutter in North America! And then you murdered David Carter because he followed the ghost accounts you used to hide your offshore trust!""

May you like

""Shoot me, then!"" Arthur sneered, spitting blood onto the floor. ""Do it! Become the monster the papers say you are! But you'll never see the files your precious journalist dug up. They're locked in my private offshore vault, set to incinerate the Hail name if my pulse stops!""

""He doesn't need your vault, Arthur,"" Rachel said, stepping forward, her eyes blazing through her tears. ""David didn't just leave files in your system. He left the decryption key with me.""
