Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The reunion was cut brutally short. Behind a stack of rusted oil drums, Victor Seo scrambled toward an emergency escape tunnel, bleeding from an ear hit by flying debris. Daniel raised his weapon to end it, but Rachel grabbed his wrist, her fingers weak but urgent.

“Don’t pull the trigger in front of the council cameras!” she warned, coughing. “Victor had this warehouse wired with surveillance. If you execute him on Crane soil without a formal tribunal, the elders will declare blood-feud on you and the twins!”

Daniel stared into the shadowy tunnel where his uncle disappeared into the night. Logic fought against the animalistic urge to tear the man apart with his bare hands. He lowered the gun, his eyes burning. “Mason!”

“Sir!”

“Burn this place to the ground. Strip the servers. We retreat to the Westbridge Tower.”

An hour later, the private medical wing of Westbridge Penthouse was quiet except for the steady rhythm of rain against glass. Dr. Elena Kim had patched Rachel’s cuts, wrapped her bruised ribs, and completed the swab protocols for the twins. Now, Silas and Hazel slept soundly in the king-sized guest bed, exhausted from their impossible day. Silas was curled around his sister protectively, while Hazel’s hand still clutched her worn stuffed rabbit.

Rachel stood by the bedroom door in an oversized gray cashmere sweater that belonged to Daniel, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. She looked fragile, yet her posture remained unbroken.

Daniel stood behind her, watching the sleeping twins. For the first time in his life, the sprawling city lights of Los Angeles below him felt completely insignificant compared to the tiny rhythmic breathing in that bedroom.

“Why didn’t you send a message, Rachel?” Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper, filled with a torturous ache. “Even a coded word. You knew what I was capable of. You knew I would have torn this city apart to find you.”

Rachel turned around slowly. Her eyes were red-rimmed. “Because you believed them, Daniel. When the accounts were drained, when your father’s ring was found in my apartment locker... you looked at me with murder in your eyes. You didn’t ask for my side. You told me to run before you forgot you loved me.”

Her words hit him with the force of a sledgehammer. Daniel closed his eyes, the memory of that fateful night burning his soul. He had been blinded by pride and the paranoid brutality of his syndicate upbringing.

“I was a coward,” he admitted, stepping closer until he was inches from her. “I let my fear of vulnerability destroy the only real thing in my life. But I swear on their lives, Rachel, Victor will pay for every tear you shed.”

Rachel reached up, her trembling fingers gently touching his scarred jawline. “He won’t just come for me now, Daniel. He’s going to strike at the Council meeting. He will claim the children are illegitimate, that you compromised our shipping empire for a traitor’s blood.”

“Let him try,” Daniel whispered, leaning his forehead against hers. “He has an army of old men. I have a family to defend.”
