Chapter 2 - Bloodlines and Broken Glass

Within thirty minutes, Daniel’s penthouse office was transformed into a tactical command center. Monitors lined the marble boardroom table, displaying real-time traffic cameras across Los Angeles. Outside, the rain beat aggressively against the glass facade, casting shifting shadows across the children as they sat huddled under a cashmere blanket in the corner.

“Silver Lake property is completely cleared out,” Mason reported, setting down a secure encrypted radio. “L.A. County sheriffs found tire tracks, shell casings from nine-millimeter rounds, and blood on the kitchen floor. No bodies.”

Daniel’s jaw clamped shut so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “Whose blood?”

“Too early to tell. But boss... Louise’s phone pinged an emergency beacon ten minutes ago near the abandoned rail yards in Vernon. Victor’s territory.”

Silas stood up, dropping his sandwich crust onto a napkin. He stepped toward Daniel, his small brow creasing deeply. “Mom has a silver whistle around her neck. She told me if the bad men ever caught her, she wouldn’t make a sound. She said she’d wait for the thunder.”

Daniel stared down at the child. Thunder. That was what Rachel used to call Daniel’s retribution whenever someone tried to push into his territory. When the world gets dark, Daniel brings the thunder. She had kept that memory alive for these children through half a decade of hiding in squalor while he sat in a gilded tower drinking scotch and cursing her name.

“Mr. Daniel?” Hazel piped up, hugging Bam the rabbit. “Are you our dad?”

The question shattered through Daniel’s hardened exterior more violently than any bullet ever could. The ruthless leader of the Silver Crane cartel felt his knees turn to water. He walked toward her, crouching so they were eye to eye. He reached out with an unsteady hand, softly brushing a drop of spilled soup from her chin.

“Yes, Hazel,” Daniel said, his voice husky. “I’m your dad.”

“You’re late,” Silas muttered, crossing his small arms over his chest.

A ghost of a smile touched Daniel’s lips, quickly extinguished by absolute fury. “I know, Silas. But I’m here now. And I’m going to bring your mother home.”

Daniel turned to Mason. “Call our private pediatric doctor. Have her brought up via the freight elevator. I want DNA swabs processed immediately—not because I doubt it, but because I need legal and medical records sealed under diplomatic classification before Victor can weaponize family court against Westbridge.”

“Understood,” Mason replied. “And what about Victor?”

Daniel retrieved a custom black Sig Sauer from the hidden safe beneath his floorboards, checking the magazine with practiced efficiency. “Victor wants a council meeting on Saturday because he thinks I’m blind. Tell our men at the docks to seize his cargo ships at Long Beach immediately. Starve his cash flow by tonight. He wanted war over an empire? He just started one over my blood.”
