Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Within

The High Council room beneath the historic Federal Bank building on Wall Street was designed to intimidate. Thick stone walls lined with ancient family crests, heavy oak tables carved in the nineteenth century, and armed guards from all Five Families standing along the perimeter with automatic weapons.

Lucas walked through the heavy iron doors with me on his arm. He wore an all-black suit, his face an impenetrable mask of pure, lethal composure. I wore a tailored black velvet gown, holding my head high despite the cold sweat dripping down my back.

Seated at the head of the long table was Don Carmine, looking older and more frail, flanked by the leaders of the remaining syndicates: the Morettis, the Falcones, and the DeLucas. But sitting in the corner, with a smirk of triumphant malice, was Victoria Vance's cousin, Julian Vance, who had taken over the remnants of their splintered faction.

""Lucas,"" Don Carmine rasped, pointing a withered finger at the center of the table. ""You dishonor this council. You broke sacred blood alliances under the pretense of taking a legitimate matriarch. And now we have proof it was all a fraudulent charade.""

Julian Vance stepped forward, tossing a thick folder onto the mahogany table. It slid to a halt right in front of Lucas.

""The full contract,"" Julian sneered, his eyes darting to me with sickening arrogance. ""Drafted by your private attorneys, signed the night of the nanny auditions. Section twelve clearly states: 'A temporary arrangement lasting eighteen months for the sole purpose of stabilizing the public image and childcare of Matteo Ravalini, for the sum of five million dollars.' She isn't your wife. She's a paid actor. A hired shield!""

The room erupted into furious murmurs from the capos. Several men reached beneath their coats, shifting their holsters.

""According to Commission law,"" Don Carmine declared, slamming his cane against the floor to restore order, ""if a Don deceives the council regarding a bloodline alliance to manipulate territory distribution, his leadership is forfeit. The Ravalini harbor holdings and distribution rights are to be divided immediately among the remaining families.""

I felt the room closing in on us. If Lucas lost his authority tonight, he and Matteo would be marked for execution within forty-eight hours. The entire empire would collapse in a bloodbath.

Lucas didn't flinch. He didn't even look at the stolen contract on the table.

""Who gave you this document, Julian?"" Lucas asked, his voice chillingly calm.

""It doesn't matter who gave it to me!"" Julian barked. ""The signatures are authentic! You lied to the Commission!""

""It matters very much,"" Lucas replied. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small audio recorder, tossing it onto the table beside the contract. He pressed play.

A familiar voice crackled through the speaker—Victoria Vance’s private attorney, speaking to Julian: 'We have the safe combination from the mole inside the Ravalini domestic staff. Once we reveal the contract at the conclave, the Commission will strip Lucas of his titles, and we execute the boy on his way to school.'

The conclave room fell into absolute, horrified silence. Even the rival Dons looked disgusted. In the mafia code, targeting an innocent child without council sanction was an unforgivable sin.

""You broke the First Rule of this table, Julian,"" Lucas said, taking a slow step toward him. ""You plotted against my son. And as for that contract...""

Lucas reached out, picked up the thirty-four-page document, and held it up for every capo to see. Then, with deliberate, unhurried strength, he ripped the entire stack of papers in half.

He ripped it again, and again, until the pieces fluttered to the floor like confetti.

""The contract is void,"" Lucas announced, his voice echoing off the stone walls like thunder. ""Because yesterday morning, Hannah Cooper legally accepted my genuine proposal. She is not my hired nanny. She is my wife, the mother of my heir, and the undisputed Donna of the Ravalini family. Any man who challenges her position challenges my entire army.""

Lucas turned to me, right there in front of the most dangerous men in the country, and took my left hand. He slid off the temporary engagement ring and replaced it with a breathtaking, flawless platinum band encrusted with black diamonds—the traditional ring of the Ravalini matriarch, kept locked in the family vault for a century.

""Do you accept this ring, Hannah?"" Lucas asked, his eyes burning with raw, undeniable truth. ""Not for eighteen months. For life.""

My voice didn't waver. My hands didn't shake. ""I accept, Lucas. With my whole life.""

Don Carmine watched us, his sharp old eyes taking in the shredded contract on the floor, the audio recording of Julian's treason, and the undeniable bond between Lucas and me.

The old Don slowly raised his cane, pointing it directly at Julian Vance.

""Julian Vance,"" Don Carmine decreed coldly. ""You have broken the blood code. Take him away.""

Ravalini enforcers moved in an instant, dragging Julian screaming from the chamber.
