Chapter 1 - The Ring That Wasn't For A Nanny

The silence inside the Ravalini penthouse penthouse was so thick you could hear the soft tick of a grandfather clock in the corner. Lucas Ravalini stood towering over me, his charcoal tailored jacket unbuttoned just enough to reveal the subtle leather holster strapped beneath his chest. His slate-gray eyes bored down into mine with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat. I was still kneeling on the plush cream carpet, Matteo’s small arms locked firmly around my waist. The five glamorous heiresses behind us were frozen like expensive statues, their perfectly applied makeup cracking under shock and indignation.

""Mr. Ravalini,"" I stammered, my cheeks burning as I tried to gently disentangle the boy's clingy grip. ""I think there is a serious misunderstanding here. I applied through the agency for a daytime tutor and childcare position. I saw the listing on the municipal board. If this is some sort of social gathering or private audition, I can see myself out immediately.""

""Stand up, Miss Cooper,"" Lucas said. His voice was a low, resonant rumble that carried absolute authority.

I scrambled to my feet, smoothing down my faded navy cardigan and pulling at the hem of my worn thrift-store slacks. In a room filled with bespoke silk gowns and diamond necklaces that cost more than my entire extended family’s collective net worth, I looked completely ridiculous.

""Matteo does not make mistakes,"" Lucas continued, taking two measured steps forward until he was standing barely an arm’s length away. Up close, a thin, jagged scar cut through his left eyebrow, giving his handsome, chiseled features a dangerous, lethal edge. ""And in this family, when a decision is made, we do not renegotiate.""

""Excuse me, Lucas!"" Victoria Vance, the blonde heiress who had offered the Cartier watch, finally found her voice. Her high heels clicked sharply against the hardwood perimeter as she stormed toward us. ""You cannot possibly entertain this farce! Look at her! She looks like she walked in off a subway grate! The syndicate agreed you would marry within our allied families to secure the harbor docks! You promised your council a woman of status, not a charity case from Brooklyn!""

Lucas did not even turn his head to look at her. ""I promised the council a mother who would ensure my son survived this world with a soul intact, Victoria. Your father owns docks. You don't know how to look a child in the eye without calculating his inheritance.""

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee. He didn't ask a sweet question. He snapped the box open, revealing an enormous emerald-cut diamond flanked by black baguettes that caught the chandelier light like glittering obsidian.

""My wife died three years ago, Miss Cooper,"" Lucas stated flatly, his gaze never wavering from mine. ""Since then, every vulture in this city has tried to slip poison into my life disguised as affection. My son has rejected thirty-four high-society candidates because every single one looked past him to stare at my empire. You sat on the floor and fixed his train.""

""That's just basic decency!"" I gasped, shaking my head and backing away until my back hit the cold marble mantle. ""I am a second-grade teacher whose school lost funding last month! I have three hundred dollars in my checking account and an eviction notice on my kitchen counter! I cannot marry a... a man like you!""

""A man like me?"" Lucas echoed, a faint, humorless smirk touching his lips. ""You know who I am. You know what my family controls from Long Island to Lower Manhattan. Which means you know I don't take no for an answer, especially when it involves the happiness of my flesh and blood.""

Matteo slipped his tiny hand into mine, his big brown eyes looking up at me with raw, heartbreaking hope. ""Please stay, Hannah. Daddy is scary, but he doesn't let bad people hurt us. Don't let them take me back to the cold rooms.""

My heart fractured into pieces right there. I looked at the terrifying mob boss standing before me, holding an eight-figure diamond ring like it was a routine contract.

""Five million dollars cleared into your account tonight,"" Lucas whispered, his voice dropping so only I could hear. ""A legal marriage contract for eighteen months. You protect my boy's heart, Hannah. I will handle the wolves.""
