Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Shield

Lucas punched a six-digit biometric code into the hidden wall panel beside the door. The magnetic locks disengaged with a heavy hydraulic hiss, and the thick reinforced door swung open.
Inside the small, windowless panic room, Matteo was huddled beneath a reinforced steel desk, clutching his broken wooden train against his chest like a holy talisman. His tiny face was streaked with dirt and dried tears, his lips trembling violently.
The moment he saw me, he let out a piercing wail and scrambled out on his hands and knees. I dropped to the floor, sliding across the threshold, and caught him in my arms, pulling his shivering little body tight against my chest.
""I'm here, sweetie. I'm right here,"" I whispered into his hair, rocking him back and forth as my own tears soaked his shoulder. ""You're safe now. Daddy and I are right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you.""
Matteo buried his face into my neck, his little hands clutching the fabric of my emerald dress with desperate strength. ""They were banging on the door, Hannah... they said they were going to take me away in a box...""
Over Matteo's shoulder, I looked up at Lucas.
The mafia Don was standing in the doorway, staring down at us. His gun was lowered, smoke still curling faintly from the barrel, but his expression had completely shattered. The ruthless, untouchable criminal was gone; in his place stood a broken, grieving father whose knees looked ready to buckle under the weight of sheer terror and relief.
Slowly, Lucas sank down onto the floor beside us. He reached out with trembling hands—hands that had ended lives without a second thought—and gently rested his broad palm against the back of his son's head.
""I'm sorry, Matteo,"" Lucas whispered, his voice cracking with an agony so profound it broke my heart. ""I'm so sorry I wasn't here.""
Matteo sniffled, pulling one arm away from me to reach out and touch his father's cheek. ""Hannah came back, Daddy. She didn't run away like the others.""
Lucas looked from his son's face to mine. In his dark, tortured eyes, I saw something shift permanently—a wall of ice collapsing into ash. He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my trembling lips, our three bodies forming an unbroken circle on the floor of that dark panic room.
""She didn't run,"" Lucas whispered, his thumb catching a tear on my cheek. ""She's never going to have to run again.""
Twenty minutes later, the estate was secure. Thirty armed enforcers lined the grounds, sweeping the woods and setting up perimeter checkpoints. A doctor had cleaned Matteo's minor scrapes, and the exhausted little boy had finally fallen into a deep, safe sleep in the master bed, with my hand still clasped in his small fingers.
The bedroom door clicked open, and Lucas stepped inside. He had changed into a clean black shirt and dark jeans, but the scent of gunpowder still clung faintly to him. He carried two mugs of hot tea.
He handed me one and sat down on the edge of the mattress beside me, his eyes never leaving the sleeping boy between us.
""Vincent Vance orchestrated it,"" Lucas said quietly, his voice dangerously level. ""He paid off two security guards who had been on our payroll for five years. They thought that by taking Matteo, they could force me to sign over the harbor operations and marry Victoria to legitimize the coup.""
""What will you do to them?"" I asked softly, bracing myself for the brutal reality of his world.
Lucas took a slow sip of his tea, his profile sharp against the lamp light. ""Vincent Vance is currently on a private jet attempting to flee to Switzerland. He won't reach international airspace. His operations are already being seized. By morning, the Vance name will no longer exist in New York.""
I looked down at the mug in my hands, feeling the heat seep into my cold skin. In my old life, such ruthlessness would have terrified me. But looking at Matteo’s peaceful face, I felt only a fierce, protective gratitude.
""Hannah,"" Lucas murmured, his voice soft and hesitating—a sound I had never heard from him before. ""You could have stayed in that car. You could have run out of that house the second the bullets started flying. Most women in my world would have used the chaos to negotiate a higher payout. Why did you run upstairs?""
I looked into his intense gray eyes, feeling my heart swell with an honesty I couldn't hold back.
May you like
""Because a child should never have to wonder if anyone loves him enough to run into the fire for him,"" I said. ""And because... I couldn't bear the thought of you carrying that pain alone again.""
Lucas stared at me, his breath hitching in his chest. For the first time since I met him, the dangerous mafia boss looked completely defenseless.
