Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The destruction of the Vance syndicate sent shockwaves through the entire New York underworld, but inside the Ravalini estate, a strange, fragile peace began to take root. Over the next three weeks, my life took on a rhythm I had never anticipated.
Every morning, I made breakfast in the massive, stainless-steel kitchen—pancakes shaped like animals for Matteo, black coffee and eggs for Lucas. The army of private chefs and maids looked on in baffled amusement as the billionaire Don’s fiancée spent her mornings flipping batter with flour smeared across her nose.
Lucas, who had previously spent fourteen hours a day locked in his midtown offices surrounded by bodyguards, began coming home by five in the afternoon. He would sit at the kitchen island, his laptop open, pretending to read financial reports while his eyes constantly tracked me as I helped Matteo build elaborate Lego cities on the floor.
""You're spoiling him with those blueprints,"" Lucas commented one rainy Tuesday afternoon, a rare, genuine smile curving his lips. ""In the Ravalini family, we build real estate, we don't play with plastic bricks.""
""Well, Mr. CEO,"" I retorted, without looking up from attaching a yellow roof tile, ""your son is currently designing a zoo that features an escape tunnel for the pandas. I think his tactical planning is already superior to yours.""
From across the room, Matteo giggled, clapping his hands. Lucas let out a low, rich chuckle that resonated through the warm room, sending a flutter through my stomach.
Later that evening, after Matteo had fallen asleep listening to a chapter of Peter Pan, I walked out onto the second-floor balcony. The autumn breeze was crisp, carrying the scent of turning leaves.
A heavy wool coat was gently draped over my shoulders. I turned to find Lucas standing behind me, his hands resting on the railing, his shoulder brushing against mine.
""You're getting comfortable here,"" he said softly.
""I am,"" I admitted, pulling the coat tighter around myself. It smelled like his cologne—woodsmoke and bergamot. ""Matteo hasn't had a single nightmare in two weeks. He told me today that he wants to go to regular public school next semester.""
Lucas frowned slightly. ""Public school is dangerous. He's a target.""
""He's a little boy who wants friends, Lucas,"" I said, turning to face him. ""You can't keep him inside a golden cage forever. You have the power to protect him anywhere. Let him be normal.""
Lucas looked at me, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes. ""And what about you, Hannah? Are you happy in this cage?""
The air between us grew thick with unspoken desire. In the weeks we had lived under the same roof, he had treated me with absolute respect, never crossing the boundary of the master bedroom, never demanding anything beyond the terms of our contract. But the heat between us had been simmering beneath the surface, waiting for a spark.
""It doesn't feel like a cage when I'm with you,"" I whispered, the confession slipping past my defenses before I could stop it.
Lucas let out a ragged breath. He closed the distance between us, his large hands coming up to cup my jawline. His touch was reverent, almost trembling with restrained passion.
""I swore after Elena died that I would never allow another woman into my heart,"" he murmured, his thumb caressing my lower lip. ""Love in this world is a weakness. It's a crosshairs painted on your chest. But you... you walked into my fortress with a broken toy train and dismantled every wall I ever built.""
""Lucas...""
""Tell me to stop, Hannah,"" he pleaded softly, his eyes burning into mine. ""Because if you don't, I'm going to rip up that eighteen-month contract and keep you forever.""
I didn't tell him to stop. Instead, I rose on my tiptoes and pressed my lips against his.
The kiss was electric, hungry, and full of a desperate, long-buried longing. Lucas pulled me flush against his chest, his arms wrapping around my waist with the fierce possessiveness of a man claiming his salvation. For that fleeting, beautiful moment under the autumn stars, the dangerous underworld and its bloody politics ceased to exist.
Until the phone in his jacket pocket began to vibrate with an urgent, continuous rhythm that meant only one thing: an emergency.
Lucas broke the kiss with agonizing reluctance, his forehead resting against mine as he pulled out the secure device. He glanced at the encrypted screen, and his jaw hardened into stone.

""What is it?"" I asked, a cold knot forming in my stomach.
Lucas looked out into the darkness of the estate grounds, his voice flat and dead. ""Don Carmine has called an emergency conclave of the Five Families for midnight. Someone leaked our marriage contract. They know you're not my real wife.""
