Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The gala dragged on like an endurance test, but by midnight, the tension shifted from icy glares to lurking malice. Lucas was pulled away into a private conference room by three underbosses to settle a heated dispute over territory, leaving me flanked by two enormous bodyguards near the towering glass terrace overlooking Central Park.
The cool night air through the cracked balcony doors provided a welcome relief from the suffocating perfume and cigar smoke inside. I stepped closer to the terrace railing, trying to calm the jittering nerves in my stomach.
""Enjoying the view while it lasts, darling?""
I turned to see Victoria Vance slipping through the French doors, a glass of champagne in her hand. Her eyes were bloodshot with rage, her smile toxic.
""Miss Vance,"" I replied calmly. ""It's a lovely evening.""
""Save the polite schoolmarm act for the press,"" she hissed, stepping closer until her face was inches from mine. ""You think you're clever, don't you? Playing the saintly little caretaker, manipulating an emotionally damaged five-year-old into choosing you so you can cash a golden lottery ticket. You're pathetic.""
""I didn't manipulate anyone,"" I said firmly, refusing to step backward. ""Matteo wanted someone to see him as a human being. You treated him like an interview question on a corporate resume.""
Victoria’s jaw clenched so hard I thought her teeth might crack. ""You don't belong here, Hannah. You have no idea what Lucas is. You see a grieving widower with money. I see the monster who executed three of his own cousins in cold blood because they embezzled from his accounts. He is a butcher. When he gets bored of your quaint little bedtime stories, he will discard you like trash. Or worse, my father will make sure you disappear into the Hudson River, and Lucas won't even notice.""
""If your father touches a hair on her head, Victoria, I will burn your family's docks to the waterline before sunrise.""
Lucas stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed against the golden light of the ballroom. His voice was dangerously calm, which made it ten times more terrifying than a shout. He walked toward us with the silent, predatory grace of a panther.
Victoria's face drained of color instantly. She took a panicked step backward. ""Lucas... we were just talking girl-to-girl—""
""Leave,"" Lucas said simply. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't even look directly at her.
Victoria didn't dare say another word. She grabbed the train of her designer gown and fled back into the ballroom, her heels practically skidding on the parquet floor.
Lucas stepped up to the railing beside me, staring out into the glittering lights of Manhattan. The wind whipped his dark hair across his forehead. For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
""Did she scare you?"" he asked quietly.
""A little,"" I admitted, looking down at my hands. ""Not because of her insults. Because of what she said about the danger. Is it true? About his cousins?""
Lucas turned his head to look at me, his eyes dark and completely unapologetic. ""Yes. They tried to sell the security codes to Matteo's school to a rival faction. In my world, disloyalty to family is a capital offense. I am not a gentle man, Hannah. I will never pretend to be. If that repulses you, tell me now.""
I looked at him—this lethal, unforgiving man who ruled an underworld empire, yet rushed home to ensure his son ate his vegetables and listened to him read bedtime stories.
""You did what you had to do to protect your son,"" I said softly. ""I might not understand your world, Lucas. But I understand wanting to protect a child with everything you have. That doesn't repulse me. It comforts me.""
Lucas stared at me, his gaze softening in a way that seemed to catch him completely off guard. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across my cheekbone, his skin warm and slightly calloused.
""You're a dangerous woman, Hannah Cooper,"" he whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he clearly couldn't control. ""Because you make me want things I thought died three years ago.""
May you like
Before I could answer, a loud commotion broke out near the ballroom entrance. Lucas's lead security officer, a massive man named Marco, came sprinting toward the terrace, his face pale and eyes wide with panic.
""Boss!"" Marco shouted, not caring who heard. ""It's the estate! The auxiliary alarms just tripped. Matteo's room is breached!""
