Chapter 8 - The Price of Surrender

The pier erupted into absolute chaos.
Rourke’s boat opened fire, the twin .50-caliber guns tearing through the side of the shipping containers with deafening thunder. The heavy rounds ripped through steel like paper, sending cascades of sparks and shredded metal across the dock.
Three of Vance’s mercenaries were cut down in the opening seconds, their weapons flying into the churning harbor waters. The remaining five scattered, scrambling for cover behind heavy machinery and concrete bollards.
Vance dove behind a forklift, screaming curses into the storm, pulling a heavy nickel-plated revolver from his waistband. ""Kill him! Kill Mercer!""
Julian didn't run for cover. He moved through the storm of gunfire like an apparition. He fired two controlled rounds, catching a mercenary who leaned out from behind a wooden pallet, dropping him instantly into the sea.
Julian advanced steadily, step by step, his weapon recoiling in steady, rhythmic cadence. He wasn't shooting to defend himself; he was hunting. Every memory of the night—the cold anniversary dinner, the electrodes strapped to Elena’s chest, the terrifying digital countdown of her heartbeat—fueled every pull of the trigger.
Another gunman lunged from the shadows with a shotgun, but Julian sidestepped the blast, grabbed the barrel, and drove his elbow violently into the man’s temple. The mercenary collapsed, and Julian fired a point-blank round into his chest before kicking the shotgun into the water.
""Julian!"" Vance’s voice shrieked from the maze of shipping containers.
Julian rounded the corner of a rusted blue container and found Vance standing twenty feet away, backed against the edge of the pier. Behind Vance was nothing but fifty feet of empty air and the black, churning waters of the harbor.
Vance was bleeding from a shrapnel wound on his forehead, his breath coming in wild, ragged gasps. He leveled his revolver straight at Julian’s heart.
""Stop right there!"" Vance screamed, his voice cracking with panic. ""Take one more step and I swear to God I’ll put a hole through your chest!""
Julian stopped. He lowered his Kimber .45 to his side, completely unbothered by the barrel pointed at his face. Rain streamed down his cheeks, washing away the blood from the knife wound on his jaw.
""Shoot,"" Julian said, his voice eerily quiet.
Vance blinked, his hand trembling on the trigger. ""You think I won't? You think I won't finish what I started five years ago?""
""You had five years to kill me, Marcus,"" Julian said, stepping forward. ""You hid in Colombia. You bought corrupt doctors. You targeted a defenseless woman while she was buying bread. You attacked her heart because you knew you never had the courage to look into my eyes and pull that trigger.""
Julian took another step.
""Stay back!"" Vance shrieked, cocking the hammer of the revolver.
""You're a coward, Marcus,"" Julian said, closing the distance to ten feet. ""You always were. That's why Anthony died. Because when the bullets started flying eleven years ago, you hid behind my brother. And tonight, you hid behind my wife.""
Vance’s finger tightened on the trigger. His eyes flared with manic desperation.
BANG.
A shot rang out across the pier, but it didn't come from Vance's gun.
A crimson flower bloomed on the shoulder of Vance’s gun arm. The nickel-plated revolver slipped from his shattered fingers, clattering onto the concrete and skidding off the edge into the sea.
Vance screamed in agony, clutching his shoulder, falling to his knees.
Julian stood over him, the barrel of his Kimber smoking in the freezing rain. He didn't fire a second time. He simply looked down at the broken man who had haunted his past, feeling nothing but a profound, hollow exhaustion.
""Please,"" Vance wheezed, looking up into Julian's eyes, seeing the exact same cold mercy that had sent him into the water five years ago. ""Julian... don't. We were brothers once.""
""Anthony was my brother,"" Julian said quietly. ""You were just an infection.""
Julian turned around and walked away, picking up the singed leather ledger from the puddle where it lay. He tossed the book into the harbor waters, watching the forty-million-dollar secrets sink into the black depths of the Atlantic, gone forever.
Behind him, Patrick Rourke and four heavily armed men stepped onto the pier from the gangway.

""What do you want done with him, Mercer?"" Rourke asked, looking down at Vance with open disgust.
Julian didn't look back. ""He likes the water. Let him swim."""
