Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

The silence in the penthouse was thick enough to choke on. Rain continued to slash violently against the glass, painting the city skyline in erratic streaks of silver and neon red. Julian Mercer did not move. His calloused thumbs hovered a fraction of an inch above Elena’s arm, his eyes locked on the deep, mottled violet marks stamped into her skin.

It was the clear, brutal impression of a man’s hand. Four long fingers pressed deep into the flesh of her bicep, and a vicious thumb mark dragged across the sensitive curve of her inner arm. The injury was fresh—no more than seventy-two hours old. It was yellowing slightly at the edges, fighting against the natural pale ivory of her skin.

""Elena,"" Julian whispered again, and this time, the quiet precision in his tone was far more terrifying than a shout. ""Who put their hands on you?""

Elena tried to pull her arm back, but he didn't let go; he simply cradled her forearm, firm enough to keep her from fleeing, yet gentle enough not to cause her any more pain. Her eyes darted away, refusing to meet his gaze. She looked toward the dying candles on the walnut table, toward the cold anniversary dinner she had lovingly prepared.

""It was an accident,"" she said, her voice trembling slightly. ""I told you, I collapsed outside the market. When the paramedics picked me up, someone must have gripped me too hard while lifting me onto the gurney.""

""Paramedics don't leave pressure contusions shaped like a choke-hold grip, Elena,"" Julian said, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped beneath his stubble. ""And they don't grab a woman from behind with enough force to burst capillaries under the surface. You lied about the grocery store, didn't you?""

A tear broke free from her lashes, tracking silently down her cheek. ""Julian, please. Don't do this tonight. Look at me. I'm right here. I'm alive. Can we just... please, can we just have one night without bloodshed?""

""You think I care about bloodshed?"" Julian’s voice cracked with raw, suppressed fury. ""Someone grabbed my wife. You suffered an acute cardiac episode, you were admitted to a hospital without my knowledge, and you are standing in front of me wired to a machine that is keeping track of whether your heart is going to give out! Do you honestly expect me to pour a glass of wine and pretend the world isn't burning down around us?""

Elena looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, desperate fire. ""Yes! Because the moment you walk out that door, you stop being my husband and you turn back into the monster they all fear! I didn't hide it to protect whoever did this. I hid it because I knew you would burn Boston to the ground, and in the fire, you would finally get yourself killed! I cannot bury another Mercer, Julian! I survived Anthony. I cannot survive you!""

Her chest heaved, and beneath the thin silk of her emerald dress, the small black monitor emitted a sharp, high-pitched electronic beep. The green light flickered amber.

Julian froze.

""Elena, breathe,"" he ordered, his voice dropping instantly into an urgent, steady cadence. He pulled her against him, feeling the rapid, chaotic fluttering against her ribs. It felt like a trapped bird beating its wings against a cage. ""Look at me. Look at my eyes. Breathe with me. In. Out.""

He took long, deliberate breaths, forcing his own skyrocketing adrenaline down so she could anchor herself to his rhythm. Slowly, painfully, the rapid beeping slowed. The light blinked amber twice more before returning to a steady, calm green.

Julian held her against his chest, burying his face in her hair. He could smell the familiar lavender and vanilla of her shampoo, undercut by the sterile, metallic scent of hospital antiseptic. It made his stomach turn violently.

""I am not leaving you,"" Julian swore into her hair, his knuckles white against her back. ""Rourke can have the shipping lanes. The Irish can take the docks. I will hand over the keys to the south terminals tomorrow morning. We will pack two bags, we will board a private charter, and we will disappear to Switzerland. To an estate where no one knows our names. I swear it to you, Elena. I am done.""

She pulled back just enough to look up into his face. There was love in her eyes, but underneath it lay a profound, heartbreaking sadness. ""You can't walk away, Julian. You know how this world works. Blood pays for blood. And the man who did this... he isn't going to let us leave.""

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. ""Who was it, Elena?""

She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper against the storm. ""He said you took something that belonged to him. He said if you didn't give it back by Friday, the next time he touched me, he wouldn't leave a bruise. He would take my heart entirely.""

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. Friday was tomorrow.

""Who was it?"" Julian repeated, his voice dangerously hollow.

""Marcus Vance,"" she whispered.

Julian’s blood ran cold. Marcus Vance was dead. Julian had watched him sink into Boston Harbor five years ago with chains around his boots.
