Chapter 6 - Shadows Over Harbor Ridge

""Elena!"" Julian dropped his weapon and fell to his knees in front of her, his bloody hands hovering inches from her chest, terrified to touch the device.

""Julian... it hurts..."" she gasped, her voice barely a breath. Tears carved clean lines through the dust and sweat on her face. ""My chest... it feels like it's burning... I can't... I can't make it stop...""

""Listen to me!"" Julian grabbed her face, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. ""Look at me, Elena! Focus on my voice! Don't look at the light! Don't listen to the beeping! Look at my eyes!""

""156 BPM,"" Mateo whispered in horror from the doorway, watching the glowing digital readout. ""Boss, you have seconds!""

Julian pulled the silver RFID coin from his pocket with his left hand. His hands, normally steady enough to shoot the wings off a fly, were trembling with pure adrenaline. He pressed the flat metallic coin against the top casing of the monitor.

A small chime sounded from the machine.

A tiny digital prompt appeared on the black screen: ENTER OVERRIDE SEQUENCE.

""8... 4... 1... 9..."" Julian whispered, his bloody index finger punching the tiny rubber buttons on the side of the unit.

158 BPM.

The device gave a long, mechanical shriek. A tiny red countdown appeared: DETONATION IN 10... 9... 8...

""Julian, get away from me!"" Elena screamed, trying to push him backward with her remaining strength. ""It's going to blow! Julian, run!""

""I am never leaving you!"" Julian roared. He held the coin flat against the sensor and hit the final confirmation key.

3... 2...

CLICK.

The mechanical shriek died instantly.

The screen blinked twice, switched from crimson to a dull, peaceful blue, and displayed four words: FAILSAFE DISARMED. RF OFFLINE.

With a sharp hiss, the pneumatic clamps holding the monitor to her ribs released. Julian caught the plastic box as it fell away from her body. The three adhesive electrodes peeled back from her skin, leaving small red welts across her collarbone.

Elena collapsed forward into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Julian gathered her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her trembling body, burying his face into her neck. He was shaking violently, the terror that had held his heart hostage finally breaking through his iron control.

""You're safe,"" he choked out, his voice thick with tears he refused to shed. ""You're safe, my love. It's over. It's off.""

Mateo leaned back against the doorframe, letting out a long, ragged exhale, sliding down to sit on the floor. ""Mother of God,"" the old guard muttered, crossing himself. ""That was too close, Julian.""

Elena clutched at Julian’s tactical sweater, her fingers digging into the wool. ""He's still out there, Julian. Marcus... he knows the disarm went through. He knows the signal died.""

Julian looked down at the disarmed monitor in his palm. He turned it over. On the back of the casing, etched into the black plastic, was a set of GPS coordinates and a timestamp: 04:00 AM. PIER 44.

""He doesn't just know the signal died,"" Julian said, his eyes turning back into the cold, merciless ice that had ruled the Boston underworld for a decade. ""He planned for it. He knew I would break Nolan. He knew I would disarm the box. The monitor was never just a bomb, Elena. It was a test to see if I was still willing to kill for you.""

""Julian, no,"" Elena whispered, looking up at the bloody gash on his cheek. ""You can't go to Pier 44. It’s an ambush. Pier 44 is an open shipping yard surrounded by cranes and shipping containers. He’ll have twenty men waiting for you.""

""Let him have fifty,"" Julian replied, gently kissing her forehead before rising to his feet. He handed the disarmed monitor to Mateo. ""Take Elena to the safe house in New Hampshire. Use the armored transport in the sub-basement. Take three men from the perimeter team and do not stop for anything until you cross the state line.""

""Julian!"" Elena cried, struggling to stand, her legs wobbling beneath her. ""If you walk out that door to Pier 44, you aren't coming back! Please, let the authorities handle it! Let the FBI have the ledger!""

Julian turned to her, his expression filled with an infinite, heartbreaking devotion. ""The FBI didn't swear an oath to protect you, Elena. I did. On the day I put that ring on your finger, I promised that nothing in this world would ever harm you while I still drew breath. Marcus Vance broke into my life, he terrified my wife, and he made your heart stutter in your chest.""

He reached to his side, racking the slide of a fresh, fully loaded automatic rifle he retrieved from the safe-room locker.

""I am going to Pier 44,"" Julian said, ""to bury a ghost.""
