Chapter 3 - Blood on the Harbor

The wind off Boston Harbor carried the sharp, bitter stench of diesel and salt. Down on Commercial Wharf, forty feet below the penthouse balcony, the black Atlantic churned against the wooden pilings like an angry animal.

Julian stood in his study, having changed out of his bloodstained clothes into a dark tactical sweater and heavy canvas trousers. In the center of the mahogany desk lay an antique steel safe box. He dialed the combination—the date of his and Elena’s wedding—and pulled open the heavy lid.

Inside sat a thick, leather-bound ledger from 2021, its edges singed by fire. Alongside it lay a custom-machined Kimber .45 and three spare magazines.

Mateo walked into the room without knocking, his heavy coat soaked from the rain. Mateo had been with the Mercer family since Anthony was a boy. He had scars across his face from the night Anthony died, and his loyalty to Julian was absolute.

""The building is locked down tight,"" Mateo said, wiping water from his eyes. ""I’ve got six men in the stairwells, two on the roof, and the private lift is keyed only to your biometric pass. If a rat tries to crawl up the pipes, we’ll know.""

""What did you find on Nolan?"" Julian asked, not looking up as he loaded brass rounds into the magazine. Each metallic click echoed sharply in the quiet room.

""You were right to be paranoid,"" Mateo grunted, tossing a manila folder onto the desk. ""Dr. Thomas Nolan. Chief of cardiology at Harbor Ridge. Brilliant surgeon, clean record for twenty years. But six months ago, his thirty-year-old son racked up a two-million-dollar gambling debt at an offshore casino run by a shell company in Rhode Island.""

Julian’s fingers paused on the slide of his weapon. ""Who owns the shell company?""

""A dead man,"" Mateo said grimly. ""Marcus Vance. The debt was bought out three weeks ago. Nolan wasn't treating Elena by coincidence, Julian. When Elena passed out on Hanover Street, the paramedic unit that picked her up wasn't city EMS. It was a private transport service funded by that same shell company. They intercepted the 911 dispatch.""

Julian felt a violent surge of adrenaline crash through his veins. The betrayal went far deeper than a chance encounter in an alleyway. This had been planned for months. They had orchestrated her collapse.

""The medication,"" Julian breathed, his voice dropping into a deadly register. ""The pills Nolan gave her. What are they?""

""I had our lab tech run the serial numbers from the prescription bottle Elena left on the counter,"" Mateo replied, his face darkening. ""It’s not an anti-arrhythmic, Julian. It’s a low-grade digitalis compound. In small doses, it mimics a heart flutter. In slightly higher doses, it triggers ventricular tachycardia. It was designed to keep her weak, terrified, and confined to the house.""

Julian slammed his fist down onto the desk, cracking the mahogany finish. ""And the monitor? The device strapped to her chest?""

Mateo hesitated, his throat working. ""It's a monitor, all right. It reads her vitals in real-time. But our tech ran an RF sweep on the penthouse five minutes ago. That little black box is transmitting an encrypted cellular ping every ten seconds. It’s not just monitoring her heart rate, boss. It’s a GPS beacon. Vance knows she’s in this penthouse. And if that monitor detects her heart rate spiking past one hundred and sixty, or if someone tries to cut the wires without entering a bypass code... it triggers a secondary charge.""

Julian’s eyes snapped to Mateo. ""What did you say?""

""There's an ounce of surgical-grade C4 embedded in the casing of the monitor,"" Mateo whispered, his voice trembling with rare horror. ""If you rip it off her chest, it detonates. If her heart stops, it detonates. Vance didn't just wire her for betrayal, Julian. He turned your wife into a dead man's switch.""

For the first time in his life, Julian Mercer felt the cold grip of genuine terror wrap around his spine. He had faced cartels, federal indictments, and rival syndicates. He had taken two bullets to the shoulder and one to the thigh without making a sound. But this was an evil so precise, so intimate, that it made his soul feel hollowed out.

""Where is Nolan now?"" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a rage that threatened to consume him.

""He's finishing a late shift at Harbor Ridge Medical,"" Mateo said. ""He’s got a private clinic on the fourth floor.""

Julian picked up the Kimber .45, chambered a round, and slid it into his shoulder holster. He grabbed the singed leather ledger from the safe and tucked it beneath his arm.

""Stay here,"" Julian ordered, his gaze fixing on Mateo with absolute clarity. ""You guard Elena with your life. If anyone comes up those stairs, shoot through the door. Do not let her know about the explosive in that box. If she panics, her heart rate will spike.""

""Julian, you can't go to Harbor Ridge alone,"" Mateo warned. ""Vance will have spotters outside the hospital.""

May you like

""Let them watch,"" Julian said, his eyes burning like black coals. ""I'm going to teach Dr. Nolan what happens when you turn medicine into murder.""
