Chapter 9 - The DNA of Redemption

Two weeks later, the morning sun rose over the Long Island estate, bathing the vast green lawns and vibrant rose gardens in golden warmth. The scars of the night raid had been completely erased: the stone walls were rebuilt, new glass sparkled in the French doors, and the fragrance of blooming jasmine filled the clean autumn air.

Inside the sunlit conservatory, a white envelope lay on the marble breakfast table.

Isabella sat in a wicker armchair, holding a steaming cup of tea. She looked healthier, color returning to her cheeks, the bruises on her neck faded to faint shadows. Her hair was brushed and pinned up elegantly, the silver olive tree necklace resting openly against her collarbone.

Alessandro walked into the room, dressed in an open-collared linen shirt and slacks. He sat across from her and touched the sealed envelope from the private genetics laboratory in Manhattan.

""The courier brought it an hour ago,"" Isabella said quietly. ""Luca left it here for you.""

Alessandro looked at the envelope. His name was typed across the front, marked with red tamper-evident wax.

""Do you want me to open it?"" he asked softly.

Isabella shook her head with a gentle smile. ""I don't need a piece of paper to tell me what I have known for five years. But I know you. I know how your mind works, Alessandro. You need proof to silence the ghosts in your head.""

Alessandro picked up the envelope, feeling the weight of the paper between his fingers. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass doors toward the emerald garden.

Outside on the grass, Sophia was running in circles, giggling with pure, unrestrained childhood joy. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her little leg completely healed under a small waterproof bandage. Max, completely recovered from his injuries, bounded playfully around her, gently nudging a red soccer ball toward her feet with his nose. Every time Sophia scored a ""goal"" between two lawn chairs, Max barked happily and wagged his tail like a propeller.

Alessandro looked down at the envelope in his hands.

Slowly, deliberately, he tore the envelope in half.

Then in quarters.

He dropped the shredded paper into the brass ash urn on the table without ever breaking the seal.

Isabella stared at him, surprised. ""You didn't read it.""

""I don't need a laboratory to tell me who my daughter is,"" Alessandro said, reaching across the table and taking Isabella’s hands into his own. ""When she looked at me with those eyes, when she held that music box... I knew. And even if science said otherwise, she would still be my daughter. Nothing on earth will ever change that.""

May you like

Isabella’s eyes glistened with tears. She squeezed his hands tightly. ""You've changed, Alessandro.""

""No,"" he whispered, lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles. ""I finally found a reason worth changing for.""
