Chapter 2 - The Heartbeat on the Line

Max surged to his feet, ignoring the agony in his battered pads, and bolted down the hall toward Room 314. Alessandro followed in long, frantic strides, his usual iron composure shattering into frantic desperation.
Inside Room 314, a crash cart was already deployed. The defibrillator hummed to life with a high-pitched electronic whine. On the bed lay Isabella, pale as winter marble, her dark hair tangled around the cervical collar, monitors screaming a flatline tone across the sterile room.
""Clear!"" the attending physician shouted, pressing the paddles to her chest. Her frail body arched off the mattress.
Max shoved his nose against the edge of the bed, whining in pure agony, his tail tucked tight. Alessandro gripped the doorframe so hard the wood groaned beneath his fingers. He had seen rivals executed without blinking. He had watched warehouses burn to ash with cold indifference. But seeing the only woman he had ever loved slip away into the dark hollow of death broke something ancient inside him.
""Seven years ago, you promised me an olive tree never dies,"" Alessandro whispered harshly under his breath, his eyes burning with unshed tears. ""You don't get to die in a cold room, Isabella. You owe me an explanation.""
""Charging to three hundred! Clear!""
A second shock jolted through her frame. The monitor sputtered, gasped, and then picked up an erratic, hesitant pulse. Sixty beats per minute. Seventy. Eighty.
The doctors exhaled, lowering their instruments. ""Sinus rhythm restored. Intracranial pressure is stabilizing. She’s fighting.""
Alessandro slowly walked over to the bed. He reached down and gently gathered her cold, limp fingers inside his rough, scarred palm. Tucked beneath her hospital gown, the silver olive tree pendant rested against her collarbone—tarnished from years of wear, but kept close to her heart every single day since she walked out into that freezing rain.
Why had she kept it? If she despised his life so much that she fled in the dead of night, why keep his gift pressed against her skin? And why raise a daughter in secret within driving distance of his territory?
Giovani reappeared at the doorway, breathing slightly heavy, wiping grease from his knuckles. ""Boss. The guy in the gray coat had a burner phone and a tracking scanner registered to a private shell company out of Queens.""

Alessandro didn't drop Isabella's hand. His voice dropped to a lethal decibel. ""Whose company?""
""Vittorio Rossi,"" Giovani replied. ""The car crash on the mountain road wasn't an accident, boss. Isabella’s brake lines were cut.""
