Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Dark

The silence inside Room 314 was heavier than lead. The steady hum of the IV drip counted down the seconds like a ticking bomb.
Isabella opened her eyes, looking directly into the stormy gaze of the man she had loved and feared in equal measure. ""You think I hid her from you out of spite? Out of hatred?""
""You left without a word,"" Alessandro said, the bitter sting of six years of abandonment leaking through his facade. ""You let me search for two years until I felt like a madman tearing up the state. I would have given you the world, Isabella. Any house, any city, any life.""
""You couldn't give me safety!"" she cried out, her voice raspy and cracked. ""Look at what just happened on that mountain! A man cut my brakes because of your name! Because of your world!""
""Was she mine when you left?"" Alessandro demanded, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. ""Were you carrying my child when you packed your bags and vanished into that rainstorm?""
Isabella turned her face toward the window, watching the gray morning clouds shift over the Manhattan skyline. ""I took a pregnancy test three days before I left. Two pink lines. I was terrified, Alessandro. That same afternoon, two masked men shot up your driver right outside our kitchen window. There was glass in my hair. Blood on my shoes. You came home and told me it was 'just business' and that I was safe behind your walls.""
She paused, swallowing the lump in her throat.
""I realized then that if I stayed, my baby would grow up in a gilded cage surrounded by bodyguards, waiting for a car bomb to take her father away—or take her. I couldn't do it. I took your grandmother's necklace, five hundred dollars, and I ran.""
Alessandro stood frozen, the breath knocked out of him more violently than any physical blow he had ever endured.
""Her name is Sophia Moretti,"" Isabella confessed, sobbing freely now. ""She has your blood type. She has your dark hair. She has your stubborn chin. Every single time she laughs, Alessandro, I saw your ghost in her eyes. I never let another man touch me. She is your daughter.""
Alessandro took a step back, his hand shaking. The brutal reality settled over his shoulders: he was a father. For five years, a little girl who belonged to him had lived in a small cottage, laughing, growing, scraping her knees, completely unprotected from the monsters of his past.
""And now Rossi knows,"" Alessandro said, the sorrow vanishing from his face, replaced by a terrifying, icy rage.
""He followed us from the grocery store,"" Isabella whispered. ""He rammed us off the embankment. If Max hadn't jumped through the shattered rear window...""
Alessandro turned toward his men standing by the door. ""Luca. Secure the entire third floor. Triple the guard rotation. Contact Dr. Costa—we are transferring Sophia and Isabella to my private medical wing in Long Island before dusk.""

""And Rossi, boss?"" Giovani asked, his knuckles cracking.
""Rossi made a mistake,"" Alessandro said, adjusting his cufflinks with deadly calm. ""He touched my family.""
