Chapter 8 - The Downfall of Isabella Romano

Two hours later, the heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate opened to let three unmarked black sedans from the Federal Bureau of Investigation drive up the winding driveway. Special Agent Miller, the lead investigator on the elusive North Jersey dock corruption task force, stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, holding a sealed federal arrest warrant.

Waiting on the front terrace were Alessandro Moretti and his legal counsel, Mr. Harrison. Between them sat a locked steel briefcase containing fifty flash drives, original certified audit reports, and the digitized microfilm proving twelve years of organized racketeering, money laundering, and premeditated murder orchestrated by the Romano family.

“Don Moretti,” Agent Miller said cautiously, keeping his distance. “I didn't believe it when your attorney called our Newark field office. You’re handing over the Romano family on a silver platter?”

“I am handing over criminals who preyed upon innocent women and children, Agent Miller,” Alessandro replied calmly, his hands resting in his pockets. “The Moretti family operates within honor. The Romanos operate like feral dogs. Everything you need to dismantle their entire syndicate from top to bottom is inside that case. In exchange, you take the prisoners off my property immediately.”

Moments later, the heavy oak doors of the mansion opened. Two armed federal marshals led Isabella Romano down the wide stone steps in handcuffs.

She had been stripped of her emerald gown and wore a plain gray prison jumpsuit provided by the estate staff. Her hair was unwashed and tangled, her eyes bloodshot from hours of screaming in the basement cells. When she saw Alessandro standing on the terrace, she lunged toward him, her chains rattling violently.

“You coward!” Isabella screamed, her voice hoarse and raw. “You gave me up to the feds! You swore you loved me! You promised to take care of me!”

Alessandro looked at her, his expression as blank and cold as a winter tombstone. “I promised to take care of my family, Isabella. You were never family. You were a thief who crept into a grieving child’s room at midnight.”

Isabella thrashed against the marshals' grip. “I am an aristocrat! I am a Romano! You can’t lock me up with common filth! My father will destroy you!”

“Your father signed over everything he owned two hours ago,” Alessandro said quietly. “He is currently on his way to an assisted living facility in Florida, stripped of every dime, every title, and every ally. You have no father. You have no money. And after today, nobody will ever speak your name in this city again.”

The federal marshals forced Isabella into the back of the cruiser. As the car door slammed shut, she pressed her tear-streaked face against the glass, her mouth open in a soundless wail of pure despair. The engine roared, and the convoy sped down the gravel driveway, disappearing through the iron gates forever.

Frankie Bellini walked up beside Alessandro, watching the dust settle. “What about Vincent, boss?”

“The freighter left the Elizabeth pier thirty minutes ago,” Frankie confirmed with a nod. “He’s in the engine room, shoveling coal all the way to Santos. If he steps off the ship, our cousins in Brazil will be waiting.”

Alessandro took a deep, cleansing breath of the cool autumn air. The heavy weight that had hung over his household since Rosa’s death finally lifted. The ghosts had been answered. The scales had been balanced.

“Go to the jeweler in the city, Frankie,” Alessandro instructed, pulling the small oval pendant from his pocket and handing it over. “Have him clean the gold. Have him replace the broken chain with solid platinum. And make sure the clasp is reinforced so strongly that not even a hurricane could break it.”

“Consider it done, boss,” Frankie smiled.
