Chapter 6 - Unlocking the Truth

The storm had passed by dawn, leaving the estate gardens soaked in clean, cold autumn air. In the estate's private basement laboratory, where the Moretti family kept their digital forensics equipment and heavy safes, the small oval pendant rested on a black velvet cloth beneath a powerful magnifying lamp.

Luca Vitali stood beside a jeweler’s workbench, using fine tweezers and a miniature magnification loop. Alessandro stood behind him, his arms folded across his chest, his eyes fixed on the small piece of gold that had triggered a war between two of the most powerful families on the eastern seaboard.

“She was right about one thing,” Luca muttered, peering through the lens. “The mechanism is brilliant. If someone tried to pry this open with a knife or a crowbar, a tiny spring-loaded pin inside would have punctured the micro-capsule and ruined whatever was stored inside.”

“Show me,” Alessandro said.

Luca picked up a fine micro-stylus. Remembering Lily’s innocent instructions from the library, he located the tiny flower engraved on the back of the pendant. He depressed the center petal with the stylus; a soft, mechanical click echoed through the quiet room. Then, gripping the top suspension ring, he rotated it twice counter-clockwise.

A microscopic seam along the edge of the pendant gave way with a soft hiss. The front filigree popped forward, revealing a hollow chamber no larger than a postage stamp. Tucked tightly inside was a pristine, multi-folded strip of high-density transparent microfilm.

“Mother of God,” Luca breathed, using the tweezers to gently extract the film. “Rosa kept this intact for twelve entire years.”

Alessandro took the film and walked over to the digital projector hooked to the high-resolution monitors. He placed the film onto the glass bed, secured the clamps, and hit the power switch.

Instantly, glowing white documents flashed onto the large monitors, sharp and undeniable.

There were hundreds of signed invoices, offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, foreign wire transfer confirmations, and high-level communications directly between Carmine Romano and corrupt officials in the Port Authority. But as Alessandro scrolled through the scanned files, his eyes landed on a scanned police report from twelve years ago that had never seen the light of day.

It was the original accident report regarding Roberto Mendes’s hit-and-run on Route 9. Attached to the file was an internal memo written in Carmine Romano’s unmistakable, spidery handwriting, addressed directly to his daughter, Isabella.

“The accountant is handled. Take care of the widow and the child if they step out of line. The company cannot survive another federal subpoena. - Father.”

Luca gasped, staring at the screen in disbelief. “Isabella was involved even back then? She was barely twenty years old!”

“She wasn't just involved, Luca,” Alessandro said, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk. “She was the one who tracked Roberto that night. She watched him die, and then she spent the next twelve years waiting for the microfilm to surface. When Carmine’s businesses began failing last year due to the federal task force closing in, they realized their only way out was to recover this archive and blackmail their way to safety. They tried to use me as their shield.”

The door to the laboratory opened, and Frankie Bellini entered, wiping grease and mud from his hands. “Boss, the old man just arrived. Carmine Romano came with two cars, demanding to know why his son and daughter haven't answered their phones since midnight. He's up in the main reception hall with six armed bodyguards, threatening to call the Commission if you don't release them.”

Alessandro took a deep breath, reaching out to safely store the microfilm inside an encrypted titanium drive. He slipped the empty gold pendant—the one Rosa had worn for fifteen years—into his coat pocket.

“Let him threaten,” Alessandro said, his voice deadly calm. “A man with no leverage makes a lot of noise. Let us go upstairs and show Carmine Romano what his family is truly worth.”
