Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the East Gate

Before Isabella could offer another lie, the shrill wail of a perimeter siren echoed from the estate grounds, piercing through the thunder and rain. A muted explosion shook the heavy glass windows on the east side of the mansion, followed immediately by the rapid, rhythmic chatter of automatic gunfire echoing across the courtyard.

Isabella’s terror instantly transformed into a triumphant, vindictive sneer. She backed away toward the fireplace, clutching the pendant at her throat.

“You’re too late, Alessandro!” she spat, her aristocratic facade entirely shattered. “My brother Vincent is here. You think you’re the king of this city, but the Romano family has three times your muscle in North Jersey. They came for me, and they came for what belongs to us! By midnight, this entire estate will be under our control, and that little bastard child will be at the bottom of the Hudson!”

Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't even look toward the windows. He simply picked up his wineglass and took a leisurely sip.

“Your brother Vincent was always an idiot,” Alessandro said mildly. “Just like your father. Tell me, Isabella, if someone disabled the cameras on my east lawn, and someone leaked to your brother that the east gate would have a blind spot tonight... who do you think opened that door?”

Isabella’s sneer froze on her face. Her eyes widened in sudden, horrifying comprehension. “What?”

Outside in the torrential rain, three black Cadillac Escalades had smashed through the secondary iron gate of the estate’s service entrance. Vincent Romano, armed with a short-barrel tactical shotgun and flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries, leaped out into the mud, expecting to catch the Moretti security team completely off-guard.

“Move, move!” Vincent yelled through the downpour, wiping water from his eyes. “Secure the west wing, grab my sister, and burn the security room to the ground!”

Suddenly, massive stadium floodlights mounted along the perimeter walls roared to life, blinding the intruders with ten thousand lumens of pure white illumination. The entire courtyard was bathed in daylight.

From the rooftops, behind the reinforced stone balustrades, and from the second-story balconies, dozens of Moretti soldiers materialized, their weapons trained directly on the three trapped vehicles. Marco Ferraro stood at the top of the sweeping stone terrace, holding a megaphone while two snipers beside him kept laser reticles pinned squarely to Vincent Romano’s chest.

“Drop your weapons and get on your knees, Romano!” Marco’s voice boomed over the estate’s loudspeakers, drowning out the thunder. “You are trespassing on Moretti land. Any movement will be treated as an act of war!”

Vincent panicked. Raising his shotgun, he fired blindly toward the terrace lights.

That single gunshot was his death warrant.

Within three seconds, a synchronized volley of return fire ripped through the engines of all three Escalades, popping the tires, shattering the glass, and pinning Vincent’s men flat into the wet gravel. Two of the mercenaries were instantly disabled by precision shoulder shots, while the remaining four dropped their weapons in terror, throwing their hands over their heads.

Vincent Romano tried to scramble back into the lead vehicle, but before he could touch the door handle, Frankie Bellini appeared from the shadowy arches of the breezeway, driving a steel-toed combat boot straight into Vincent’s solar plexus. The breath exploded from Vincent’s lungs as he collapsed into the mud, gasping for air like a landed fish. Frankie planted his heavy boot firmly onto Vincent’s wrist, pinning the shotgun into the dirt, while a dozen armed guards surrounded the remnants of the failed invasion.

“Clean them up,” Frankie ordered coldly, clicking his radio transmitter. “Don Alessandro, the vermin have been trapped. Not a single scratch on our men.”

Back in the dining room, Alessandro’s earpiece buzzed with Frankie’s confirmation. Alessandro smiled faintly and tapped his ear once before looking back up at Isabella, who was now trembling so violently she had to hold onto the marble mantlepiece to stay upright.

“Your brother’s little rescue operation lasted approximately two minutes and fourteen seconds,” Alessandro informed her gently. “It seems Vincent didn't inherit your father’s patience.”

Isabella’s knees buckled. She slid down against the fireplace, the lush emerald velvet of her dress pooling on the wooden floor like spilled wine. “Alessandro... please. Please listen to me. I had no choice. My father... he threatened to disown me. He made me do it!”

“Your father didn't make you steal a toy from a crying four-year-old child,” Alessandro said, rising from his chair and walking slowly toward her. His towering shadow fell over her like a shroud. “Your father didn't stand in front of thirty guests and lie to my face. You did that because you thought I was soft. You thought because I cared for Rosa and her daughter, that I was weak.”

Alessandro reached down, his strong fingers slipping behind Isabella’s neck. With a single, sharp snap of his wrist, he broke the delicate golden chain. The oval pendant slipped into the palm of his hand, leaving a thin red welt across Isabella’s throat.

“You are not going to jail, Isabella,” Alessandro whispered, staring down at her with absolute disgust. “That would be too easy. Luca, take her to the basement cells. Put her next to her brother. Tomorrow morning, we have a very important family meeting with Carmine Romano.”
