Chapter 2 - The Whispering Gallery

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the estate had settled into an eerie, deceptive calm. The grand dining room where Lily Mendes had made her innocent yet explosive accusation the previous evening was being reset with pristine white linen, polished silver, and fresh white lilies. To the household staff, Don Alessandro Moretti was merely hosting another high-level business luncheon with his port logistics managers. But behind the heavy oak walls and soundproof plaster, every single room in the mansion was being systematically stripped down for secrets.

Isabella Romano sat in the sunlit parlor of the private master suite, wearing an elegant cream-colored silk robe. Her long dark hair was brushed meticulously over her shoulders, framing a face that was usually celebrated for its striking, aristocratic beauty. Yet today, her hands trembled ever so slightly as she adjusted the delicate golden chain around her neck. The oval pendant rested coldly against her collarbone.

She stood up and paced toward the full-length mirror, staring at the small repaired clasp behind her neck. The patch of yellow gold looked glaringly mismatched under the afternoon sunlight. Her teeth bit into her lower lip until it stung.

“Stupid child,” Isabella hissed under her breath. “Why did she have to wake up? Why did she have to come downstairs?”

Her thoughts were interrupted by a polite, rhythmic tap on the door. Isabella stiffened instantly, smoothing down her silk robe and adopting her usual composed, haughty expression.

“Come in,” she called out smoothly.

The door swung open, and Alessandro stepped inside, carrying a small lacquer tray with two porcelain cups of herbal tea. He looked entirely relaxed, his collar unbuttoned by a single notch, the image of a doting, powerful partner who had brushed off the awkwardness of the previous night.

“You barely touched your breakfast this morning, bella,” Alessandro said, setting the tray down onto the antique tea table. “The staff said you were resting, so I brought you chamomile myself.”

Isabella smiled, a radiant expression designed to charm and disarm. She stepped close, placing a warm hand against his chest, right over his beating heart. “You spoil me, Alessandro. Last night was... exhausting. That poor Mendes child. I felt terrible for her, really. Grief does terrible things to young minds. I was so worried you were embarrassed in front of Tomas and Salvatore.”

“Embarrassed? Never,” Alessandro replied, his eyes crinkling with what looked like genuine fondness. He gently placed his hand over hers. “In our world, family always comes first. Little Lily was simply remembering a ghost. But you handled it with such grace.”

He reached out his other hand, his calloused fingertips lightly grazing the oval pendant hanging against her throat. Isabella felt a sudden, electric chill shoot down her spine, but she forced herself not to flinch.

“It really is quite unusual,” Alessandro remarked casually, tilting the pendant so the sunlight caught the worn filigree. “The craftsmanship seems vintage. Remind me again where we bought this? My memory has been so cluttered with the harbor union disputes.”

Isabella held his gaze without blinking, her voice dropping into a soft, melodic purr. “Don't you remember? You bought it for me during that charity auction in Greenwich back in November. You said it reminded you of an antique cameo from Milan. You tucked it into my jewelry box when we returned.”

Alessandro kept his smile steady, even as his blood turned to ice. Greenwich had never hosted such an auction; he had been in Chicago attending a sit-down with the Midwestern commission that entire weekend. Isabella was lying with the practiced fluency of an actress who had rehearsed her lines for weeks.

“Ah, yes. Greenwich,” Alessandro nodded slowly. “Forgive me. Sometimes the days blur together. Wear it proudly, darling. It suits you.”

He kissed her forehead, lingered for half a heartbeat to catch that undeniable scent of night-blooming jasmine, and then turned toward the door. Just before stepping out, he paused and looked back over his shoulder.

“Oh, and Isabella? I have invited our family attorney, Mr. Harrison, for dinner tonight. Since our wedding is only two months away, it is time we finalize the trust funds and the prenuptial allocations for the estate properties. I want to make sure you are thoroughly taken care of.”

Isabella’s eyes flashed with a sudden, predatory spark of ambition that vanished almost as fast as it appeared. “Of course, Alessandro. Whatever you think is best.”

The moment the door closed behind him, Alessandro’s warm smile dropped entirely. He walked swiftly down the carpeted hallway where Luca was waiting by the grandfather clock.

“Did you run the forensic trace?” Alessandro demanded quietly.

Luca nodded gravely, leaning in to whisper. “The flash drive used on your terminal was plugged in at 12:49 a.m. and extracted at 1:04 a.m. During those fifteen minutes, someone copied the offshore banking route for the Mendes Trust—the account you established to provide for Lily until she turns twenty-five. But that wasn’t all, boss.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits. “What else did they touch?”

“Rosa’s original safe deposit box authorization,” Luca whispered. “The one containing her handwritten confession from ten years ago. Boss... Isabella didn't steal that necklace because she liked the gold. She stole it because she thought there was a key inside.”
