Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut

For forty-eight hours, the estate was locked down tighter than a federal penitentiary. Nora was told to stay inside the main house with Lucy, surrounded by guards day and night. The paranoia in the air was suffocating; every gardener, maid, and security driver was subjected to intense, private interrogations by Frank in the soundproofed wine cellar.

Nora felt the walls closing in. Lucy was growing restless, sensing the suffocating tension, constantly asking why Bishop wasn't allowed outside to play fetch.

On the third afternoon, Nora received a frantic phone call on the kitchen landline.

""Nora? Oh God, Nora, please help me!"" a voice cried through the speaker. It was her younger sister, Clara, who lived three towns over.

""Clara? What's wrong? What happened?"" Nora cried, clutching the receiver with white knuckles.

""Men with guns came into my apartment!"" Clara sobbed hysterically. ""They said... they said they know you're staying with Vincent Calder! They told me if you don't bring Lucy and meet them at the abandoned railyard on 4th Street, they’re going to execute me! They said if you tell Vincent, they’ll kill me before he can even start his car! Please, Nora, I don't want to die!""

The line went dead.

Nora’s blood ran cold. The sheer terror of the moment paralyzed her mind. She knew Vincent was powerful, but she also knew how ruthless the Vance family was. If she told Vincent, there would be a shootout, and Clara would be collateral damage.

Driven by maternal instinct and family desperation, Nora made the most dangerous decision of her life.

She bypassed the main entrance, slipping out through the old conservatory service door where the surveillance camera had been temporarily disabled for maintenance. Holding Lucy tightly by the hand, she whispered to the toddler to be quiet as a mouse. They slipped into the staff parking lot, got into Nora's beat-up sedan, and sped out through the service gates into the pouring rain.

She had no idea that a sleek black sedan had been waiting three blocks away, trailing her tail lights through the storm.

Forty minutes later, Nora arrived at the cavernous, rotting warehouse at the abandoned railyard. The rain drummed mercilessly against the rusted corrugated roof. Clutching Lucy against her chest, Nora stepped through the broken industrial doors.

""Clara?"" she shouted into the cavernous darkness. ""Clara, I'm here! Let her go!""

A slow, mocking clap echoed from the catwalk above.

Elena Vance stepped out from the shadows, flanked by five armed men in tactical gear. Tied to a wooden chair below was not Nora’s sister, but a terrified young woman holding an audio recorder that had played Clara’s deep-faked, synthesized voice on a loop.

""You really are remarkably stupid, Nora,"" Elena sneered, descending the metal stairs, a small silver handgun gleaming in her gloved hand. ""You thought this was about your pathetic family? This was about getting Vincent Calder's only weakness out into the open.""
