Chapter 5 - Whispers of Betrayal

The steel-reinforced vault beneath the Calder mansion was lined with emergency rations, communications arrays, and security feeds. Nora sat on a leather sofa, holding a sleeping Lucy against her chest, her body trembling with adrenaline as the muffled sounds of gunfire and shouting echoed through the concrete ceiling.
It lasted twenty minutes. Then, the heavy hydraulic lock hissed open.
Vincent walked in. His white shirt was smudged with soot, and there was a dark tear across his sleeve, but his eyes were blazing with cold fury. Behind him stood Frank, holding a battered leather satchel.
""Is Lucy alright?"" Vincent demanded immediately, kneeling beside Nora.
""She slept through the worst of it,"" Nora whispered, her voice cracking. She looked at the crimson stain soaking through the rip in his shirt. ""You're bleeding!""
""It's just a graze,"" he dismissed it with a wave of his hand, though his jaw was clenched against the pain. ""Let Frank look at it later.""
Nora didn't listen. She set Lucy down gently on the cushions, stood up, and pulled open the first-aid kit mounted to the wall. With practiced, steady hands born from years of patching up childhood scrapes, she stepped up to the feared syndicate boss, unbuttoned his bloodied shirt, and began cleaning the shallow bullet wound on his bicep with antiseptic.
Vincent hissed through his teeth, but he didn't pull away. He stared down at her face, watching the fierce concentration and undeniable care in her eyes. ""You don't run away,"" he noted softly. ""Most people would have packed a bag and sprinted for the front gate.""
""Lucy and I have spent our whole lives running from things,"" Nora said, wrapping a sterile bandage tightly around his arm. ""Besides... I trust you to keep us safe.""
Vincent’s breath caught. He placed his uninjured hand against the side of her neck, pulling her gently toward him until their lips met in a fierce, desperate kiss. It was electric, full of raw hunger and unspoken devotion that had been simmering beneath the surface for weeks. Nora kissed him back with equal passion, gripping his broad shoulders, anchoring herself to him in the middle of the storm.
When they finally broke apart, breathing heavily, Frank cleared his throat awkwardly from the doorway.
""Hate to interrupt, Boss,"" Frank said, holding up a black burner phone and a set of architectural blueprints recovered from the dead intruder's bag. ""The shooter wasn't a mercenary from the Chicago syndicates. He was an ex-contractor hired through an offshore account.""
Vincent turned, his romantic warmth vanishing behind a mask of lethal calculation. ""Whose account?""
May you like
""Marcus Vance,"" Frank said grimly. ""Elena’s father. But that's not the worst part."" Frank held up the blueprints. ""These aren't general plans of the estate. These are internal schematics of the staff quarters and the security blind spots. Boss... someone inside this house gave them the access codes.""
Vincent’s eyes darkened into obsidian pools. ""Find the rat. And bring Marcus Vance to me.""
