Chapter 10 - The Master’s New Sentence

Six months later, the morning sun poured through the panoramic glass windows of the newly renovated Calder estate, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood floors.
The Chicago papers had spent three months sensationalizing the absolute collapse of the Vance empire, with Marcus and Elena receiving multi-decade federal prison sentences for extortion, kidnapping, and financial treason. Meanwhile, the Calder enterprise had undergone an unprecedented transformation. Under the relentless scrutiny of the feds and the quiet, guiding influence of a certain former housekeeper, Vincent Calder had systematically legitimized every single asset, transitioning into legitimate real estate development, maritime logistics, and green energy investments.
Down in the heart of Lincoln Park, the grand opening of Nora’s Oven had been the talk of the city. Funded by a completely legal business loan personally guaranteed by Vincent Calder, the bakery had lines stretching around the block every morning.
Inside the Calder mansion, the long walnut dining table—once the site of terrifying mafia summits and life-or-death decisions—was covered in pink tablecloths, powdered sugar, and a massive three-tier chocolate birthday cake.
Lucy, now celebrating her fourth birthday, was wearing a sparkly tiara and presiding over her guests with royal authority. Sitting at the table were Frank, Mason, and a dozen formidable-looking men in tailored suits, each of them politely wearing cone-shaped paper party hats with elastic bands digging into their double chins.
Bishop lay beneath the table, contentedly gnawing on a giant, butcher-cut marrow bone, wearing a silly pink party collar.
""More tea, Mr. Frank?"" Lucy asked, brandishing a tiny porcelain teapot.
""Why, thank you, Princess Lucy,"" Frank grunted politely, raising a miniature plastic teacup with his pinky finger extended, much to the silent amusement of Mason.
Out on the sunlit terrace, Nora stood leaning against the stone balustrade, looking out over the flourishing rose gardens. She wore an elegant white sundress, her face glowing with radiant peace and happiness.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind. Vincent pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin comfortably on the top of her head. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the healed scar on his forearm.
""You look breathtaking, Mrs. Calder,"" Vincent murmured against her ear.
Nora turned in his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, smiling up into the dark eyes that now held nothing but boundless warmth and devotion. ""I'm not Mrs. Calder yet, Vincent. The wedding isn't for another three weeks.""
Vincent reached into his pocket and produced a velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the morning light like a prism.
""I bought this four months ago,"" Vincent confessed, his voice tender and thick with emotion. ""I was terrified that if I gave it to you, you'd think I was trying to buy your heart. But every day you and that little girl spend in this house makes me realize that without you, I’m just a man with empty rooms.""
Tears of pure happiness welled in Nora’s eyes. ""Vincent... you never had to buy anything. You gave Lucy a father, and you gave me a home where I never have to be afraid again.""
He slipped the ring onto her finger. It was a perfect fit. Vincent leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, sweet, lingering kiss that sealed every promise they had ever made to each other.
""Excuse me!"" a bossy, high-pitched voice interrupted from the French doors.
Vincent and Nora broke apart, laughing, as Lucy marched out onto the terrace with her hands planted firmly on her tiny hips. Captain Carrot was tucked securely under her arm, his stitched scars now legendary in the Calder household.
""The cake is melting,"" Lucy announced with supreme authority. ""And Daddy is in timeout if he doesn't cut it right now.""

Vincent looked down at his soon-to-be daughter, his heart completely full. He swept her up into the air, spinning her around as she giggled uncontrollably, before pulling Nora into a tight, unbreakable family embrace.
""Guilty as charged, Captain,"" Vincent smiled, kissing Lucy's cheek. ""Sentenced to life with the people I love."""
