Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Garden

Three weeks passed, and the atmosphere on the Calder estate shifted dramatically. What had once been a mausoleum of cold marble, quiet men with shoulder holsters, and suffocating tension had turned into an unlikely home. Lucy had practically adopted Bishop, leading the terrifying ninety-pound war dog around the sprawling gardens with a piece of pink yarn tied loosely to his collar.

Vincent, to the absolute bewilderment of his inner circle, started coming home before dusk. He spent evenings on the back patio, ostensibly reviewing contracts, while actually watching Lucy build crooked Lego towers and listening to Nora talk about her dream of one day opening a small neighborhood bakery.

""You should do it,"" Vincent told Nora one evening as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in strokes of purple and gold.

Nora laughed softly, wiping flour from her hands onto her apron—she had insisted on baking fresh bread for the household staff despite Vincent’s protests. ""With what money, Vincent? Banks don't give loans to single mothers with zero credit and a mountain of medical debt from an ex-husband who skipped town.""

Vincent took a sip of his bourbon, his dark eyes never leaving her face. ""I have banks. I could write a check right now.""

Nora’s smile faded, replaced by quiet dignity. ""No. I appreciate it, Vincent, more than you know. But I need to earn my own life. If I let you hand it to me, I’m just trading one man’s shadow for another’s.""

Vincent didn't get angry. Instead, something like profound respect flared in his gaze. He set his glass down and stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them until Nora could smell the clean scent of cedarwood and expensive tobacco on his clothes.

""You aren't in my shadow, Nora,"" he said, his voice dropping into that deep, husky register that made her pulse race. ""You're the only light this damn house has seen in twenty years.""

Nora’s breath hitched. Vincent reached out, his rough, calloused thumb gently grazing her cheekbone, wiping away a stray streak of white flour. His touch was reverent, almost hesitant, as if he feared his lethal hands might break something so delicate. Nora didn't pull away; she leaned into his palm, closing her eyes as a shiver ran down her spine.

""Vincent..."" she whispered, her lips parting.

He leaned down, his forehead gently resting against hers. ""I know who I am, Nora. I know the violence that surrounds my name. But when I’m with you and Lucy, I forget how dark the world is.""

Just as his lips brushed hers in the faintest, heart-stopping promise of a kiss, a sharp crack echoed through the manicured hedges at the perimeter of the estate.

Bishop shot up from the grass, barking savagely toward the tree line.

Vincent’s entire posture transformed in a heartbeat. He shoved Nora behind him, his suit jacket parting to reveal the sleek black grip of his customized Kimber .45 pistol. Frank and Mason appeared out of nowhere, weapons drawn, their shoes pounding across the patio flagstones.

""Boss!"" Frank yelled, his radio crackling with static. ""Intruder on the south wall. Security cameras were looped two minutes ago. It's a professional job.""

Vincent racked the slide of his pistol with a deadly, metallic click. ""Get Nora and Lucy into the panic room in the basement. Now!""
