Chapter 8 - The Tribunal of Shadows

The grand ballroom had been transformed into a court of shadows. Twelve powerful men sat along a curved mahogany table, their expressions carved from stone. These were the capos and business magnates who controlled the ports, the rail lines, and the political machinery of the Midwest. At the center of the room sat Vincent, bound to a heavy wooden chair, his face bruised and swollen, yet his eyes still blazing with desperate defiance.
Damian entered the room, exuding an aura of absolute authority. But to the shock of every man seated at the table, he did not walk in alone.
He held my hand firmly in his, guiding me to stand directly at his right side.
A murmur of shock rippled through the assembled mobsters. To bring an outsider—let alone a woman dressed in simple clothes—into the sacred council chamber was an unprecedented breach of tradition.
""Damian!"" one of the senior capos, an elderly man named Salvatore, spoke up, his brow furrowed in disapproval. ""What is the meaning of this? Why is this woman in the inner sanctum? And why is your own blood bound in chains before us?""
""Because the man in chains is a traitor and a murderer,"" Damian answered, his voice echoing powerfully off the high vaulted ceilings.
With a resounding thud, Damian dropped the heavy leather-bound ledger from Leonardo's secret vault onto the center of the table. Beside it, he laid Dr. Evans's genetic report and the audio recordings intercepted from Vincent's private security team during the kidnapping attempt.
""Fifteen years ago,"" Damian declared, his eyes sweeping across the council members, ""Vincent Belucci orchestrated the hit on my late stepmother, Julianna. He staged her car accident on Lake Shore Drive to seize her fifty-million-dollar estate trust. When Julianna survived and went into hiding to protect her only daughter, Vincent spent the next decade hunting them.""
Vincent let out a ragged, hysterical laugh from his chair. ""Lies! All lies designed to strip me of my legitimate inheritance! This woman is an opportunist! A common maid who seduced my nephew with sob stories to steal our family’s wealth!""
""Silence!"" Salvatore commanded, slamming his fist onto the table. The old capo adjusted his spectacles, carefully reviewing the signed documents, the bank transfer records detailing Vincent’s payments to corrupt harbor officials, and the verified Swiss adoption papers bearing Leonardo Belucci’s official wax seal.
As Salvatore read, the faces of the other council members darkened. In their world, violence was a tool of business, but the unsanctioned murder of a don's wife and the attempted kidnapping of a legitimate heir violated the foundational code of the syndicate.
""The signatures are authentic,"" Salvatore announced, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. ""Leonardo’s seal is unbroken. Grace Miller is Julianna’s legitimate daughter, recognized under Swiss law and Leonardo’s final testament as the primary heir to sixty percent of the Belucci holdings.""
The capos turned their glares toward Vincent, disgust radiating from their expressions.
""Vincent Belucci,"" Salvatore continued, rising to his feet. ""You attempted to murder an heir of this family. You attempted to sell a child of our bloodline into human trafficking to conceal your embezzlement. By the ancient laws of this council, your titles are stripped. Your assets are seized and transferred to Grace Miller and her daughter. You are cast out from this family, forever marked as an enemy of the syndicate.""
""No!"" Vincent screamed, thrashing against his bonds. ""You can't do this to me! I built this empire alongside Leonardo! Damian, you bastard, you can't strip me of my name!""
Damian stepped forward, stopping inches from his uncle's face. ""Your name died the moment you touched my daughter's teddy bear, Vincent.""

He signaled to the armed guards waiting by the heavy doors. ""Take him to the federal authorities. Marco has already delivered the unredacted financial ledgers and shipping manifests of Vincent’s independent smuggling operations to the United States Attorney’s Office. He will spend the rest of his miserable life inside a maximum-security penitentiary, stripped of every cent he ever stole.""
Vincent’s screams echoed down the marble hallways as the guards dragged him away, his reign of terror ending not with a glorious shootout, but with the cold, unyielding slam of a prison transport van.
