Chapter 4 - Bloodline and Betrayal

Dr. Evans performed the cheek swabs with practiced, gentle efficiency, ensuring Emma felt no pain by playfully telling her he was checking for ""sugar plum fairies"" in her mouth. Emma giggled, the warm breakfast and safe atmosphere having temporarily dissolved her fear. But for me, the tension was suffocating. Every ticking second on the grandfather clock in the study felt like the countdown to an explosion.

While we waited for the lab results, Damian led me down a winding stone staircase into the depths of the mansion. The Belucci wine cellar was vast, lined with thousands of dusty vintage bottles resting in arched brick alcoves. At the far end of the cellar, behind a massive oak barrel that rotated smoothly on hidden steel hinges, stood a reinforced steel security door.

""This was my father’s deepest sanctum,"" Damian explained, his voice echoing slightly against the damp subterranean stone. ""Only he, Margaret, and his most trusted consigliere knew it existed.""

Set into the center of the steel door was a dual-key mechanism shaped precisely like the wild rose lockets. Damian inserted his locket into the left slot. He turned to me, extending his hand. ""Grace. Insert yours.""

My hand shook as I slid my mother’s locket into the right slot. The metal clicked into place with satisfying precision. Together, we turned the lockets clockwise.

A heavy pneumatic hiss echoed through the cellar. The heavy steel door popped open by two inches. Damian pushed it wide, revealing a small, climate-controlled vault containing rows of leather-bound ledgers, stacks of bearer bonds, and a single velvet-lined box sitting atop a mahogany pedestal.

Damian approached the pedestal and lifted the lid. Inside lay a thick, wax-sealed envelope addressed to My Son, Damian in elegant, flowing cursive that I instinctively recognized from the single note left in my baby blanket.

Damian broke the seal. His eyes scanned the parchment, his jaw tightening with every line he read. As he reached the bottom of the page, a terrifying stillness settled over him.

""What does it say?"" I asked, barely daring to breathe.

Damian looked up, his expression a mix of profound grief and cold, murderous wrath. ""My father didn't just know about you, Grace. He legally adopted you through private court filings in Switzerland five months before his death. He made you the primary beneficiary of sixty percent of the Belucci legitimate assets—the shipping lines, the real estate holdings, the offshore trusts. I was named your legal guardian and trustee until you were found.""

I gasped, pressing a hand to my mouth. ""Why didn't he tell you while he was alive?""

""Because Vincent had poisoned him,"" Damian whispered, the horror of the realization crashing down upon him. ""My father was slowly dying of heavy metal toxicity for two years. He didn't know which of his lieutenants were compromised. He knew that if Vincent discovered the will before I had consolidated control of the family soldiers, Vincent would launch an internal war and wipe out everyone connected to Julianna.""

Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind us slammed shut with a deafening boom.

The electronic lock engaged with an ominous mechanical click. The lights inside the vault flickered and died, plunging us into pitch-black darkness, save for the faint red glow of an emergency ventilation light.

""Damian!"" I screamed, lunging toward the door in sheer panic. ""Emma! Emma is upstairs with Margaret!""

Through the thick speaker grille on the vault door, a mocking voice crackled to life. It was Vincent.

""How touching,"" Vincent’s voice purred through the intercom. ""The little maid and the righteous boss, locked in the tomb Leonardo built. You always were too sentimental, Damian. Just like your foolish father.""

""Vincent!"" Damian roared, slamming his fists against the reinforced steel. ""If you lay a single finger on that little girl, I will skin you alive!""

May you like

""Don't worry about the little bastard, nephew,"" Vincent sneered, his voice dripping with sadistic glee. ""A three-year-old child will fetch a very handsome price on the black market overseas, far away from Chicago where she can never claim a single dime of my fortune. As for the two of you... the ventilation system in that vault is set to shut off in precisely twenty minutes. Enjoy your final moments together among your precious papers.""

The intercom cut out with a sharp click. The faint hum of the air ducts died instantly. Silence, suffocating and lethal, settled over the darkened vault.
