Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Within an hour, the Belucci estate was locked down tighter than a military base. But the sirens wailing outside didn't belong to the Chicago police—they belonged to Damian’s private medical teams and the high-ranking syndicate elders who had been summoned for an emergency council meeting at midnight.

Dr. Evans bustled into the private family quarters on the second floor, carrying a sealed manila envelope containing the genetic analysis. Emma was curled up on a massive plush sofa, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping warm chamomile tea with honey while Margaret gently brushed her tangled hair.

""The results are conclusive, Mr. Belucci,"" Dr. Evans announced, handing the documents to Damian. ""Grace Miller’s DNA shares a direct ninety-nine-point-nine percent maternal match with the tissue samples preserved from Julianna Belucci. Furthermore, Emma possesses the distinct genetic markers of the Belucci lineage through Julianna's verified estate registry. Grace is legally and biologically Julianna's sole surviving daughter.""

I sat beside my daughter, my hands trembling as I stared at the official medical crest. All my life, I had believed I was unwanted, thrown away like trash into the cold foster system. But looking at the legal documents, the truth was laid bare: my mother had spent every waking breath fighting to keep me hidden from the greed that infested this family.

Damian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate courtyard. Down below, black town cars were pulling up one after another. Men in dark suits and heavy coats were gathering under the glow of the courtyard lanterns. The syndicate board had arrived.

""Damian,"" I spoke softly, walking up beside him. ""What happens now? Vincent's allies won't just let this go. They know who I am now. Emma and I will always have targets on our backs.""

Damian turned to me. The exhaustion on his face was palpable, but beneath it lay an unbreakable resolve. ""Vincent’s power came from money and fear. Tonight, he loses both. The syndicate operates on strict laws established by my grandfather. Treason against the bloodline carries only one sentence: total forfeiture of all assets and permanent exile or execution.""

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The intimacy of the gesture sent a shiver through my spine. For months, I had been an invisible shadow scrubbing his floors; now, he looked at me as an equal, perhaps even something more.

""You and Emma are not running, Grace,"" he said, his voice dropping to a tender whisper. ""My father left you this house. He left you the shipping fleet. You are not a maid in this mansion—you are its rightful mistress.""

""I don't want the empire, Damian,"" I admitted honestly, looking back at my sleeping child. ""I don't care about the shipping lines, the casinos, or the millions of dollars. I just wanted my daughter to grow up without being cold. I wanted her to have a mother who doesn't cry when the rent notice arrives.""

""Then let me carry the weight of the empire for you,"" Damian replied, stepping closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the steady beat of his heart against his chest. ""I have spent thirty-eight years building walls around my life. I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe from pain. But when I heard Emma praying in that chapel last night... when I saw you willing to die in that vault just to hold her one last time... I realized I had spent my entire life ruling an empty castle.""

Before I could answer, a knock echoed at the double doors. Marco entered, bowing his head respectfully.

""Boss. The council is assembled in the grand ballroom. Vincent has regained consciousness. He is demanding an open tribunal, claiming you fabricated the claims to seize his board shares.""

Damian’s eyes hardened into steel once more. ""Bring the evidence, Marco. Bring the ledger from the vault and Dr. Evans's genetic report. It's time to show the council what happens to those who betray the Belucci name.""
