Chapter 6 - Blood on the Marble

We moved through the shadows of the subterranean tunnel like ghosts. The air grew colder as we neared the underground parking facility, where Damian kept his armored sedans. The harsh glare of fluorescent overhead lights spilled across the concrete floor, accompanied by the revving engine of a black SUV.

Through the frosted glass of the boiler room door, I saw the horrifying scene unfold.

Vincent stood near the open trunk of the SUV, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical gear. Margaret was on her knees nearby, weeping hysterically, her hands tied behind her back with plastic zip-ties. And tucked under the arm of one of Vincent’s thuggish guards was Emma, thrashing wildly, her little boots kicking against his bulletproof vest.

""Let me go! Bad man! Let me go!"" Emma wailed, tears streaming down her blotchy red cheeks. ""Mommy! Mommy!""

""Shut that brat up before I tape her mouth shut!"" Vincent snarled, glancing nervously at his gold wristwatch. ""Where is the private transport helicopter? It was supposed to be at the helipad five minutes ago!""

""It's touching down on the north lawn now, boss,"" one of the guards replied, racking the bolt of his assault rifle. ""What about the vault? You sure the boss and the maid won't break out?""

""They're suffocating on their own carbon dioxide as we speak,"" Vincent sneered, a sickening grin stretching across his face. ""By tomorrow morning, Damian will be found dead of accidental asphyxiation, and as the sole surviving Belucci elder, I assume total control of the family empire. Now throw the child in the trunk!""

Hearing those words broke every instinct of self-preservation inside me. But before I could scream, Damian placed a firm hand over my mouth, pulling me back into the shadows.

""Listen to me,"" Damian whispered against my ear, his breath warm and steady despite the chaos. ""I am going to take out the two guards on the left flank. The moment the shooting starts, you sprint along the eastern wall behind the concrete pillars. Grab Emma and dive behind the armored Rolls Royce. Do not look back. Do not stop. Do you understand me?""

I looked into his steel-gray eyes and nodded fiercely. ""Bring my baby back.""

Damian didn't wait another second. He kicked open the heavy metal door and stepped into the illuminated garage with terrifying calm.

Pfft! Pfft!

The suppressed pistol coughed twice. The two guards on the left collapsed instantly, blood blooming across their tactical vests before their bodies even hit the pavement.

""Ambush!"" the third guard screamed, raising his weapon, but Damian was already moving, closing the distance with lethal speed. He grabbed the barrel of the guard's rifle, driving his elbow upward into the man's throat with sickening force, disarming him in a single fluid motion.

""Run, Grace!"" Damian roared.

I broke into a dead sprint. Concrete blurred beneath my feet. Vincent spun around, his eyes bulging in pure terror as he saw his nephew alive and slaughtering his personal security detail.

""Shoot him! Kill him!"" Vincent shrieked, backing toward the driver's seat of the SUV.

The fourth guard, who was holding Emma, reached for his sidearm. In his distraction, Emma bit down viciously onto his forearm. The guard howled in pain, dropping her onto the concrete.

""Emma!"" I screamed, diving across the cold floor.

Bullets pinged off the concrete around us, sending sparks and ricochets whistling through the air. Damian fired two precise rounds into the guard's chest, neutralizing the threat instantly. I scooped Emma into my arms, rolling behind the massive reinforced wheel of the armored Rolls Royce just as a barrage of gunfire tore through the glass windows above us.

""Mommy! Mommy!"" Emma sobbed, burying her face into my chest, her little arms locking around my neck with bruising strength.

""I have you, baby! I have you, you're safe!"" I cried, kissing her hair, shielding her entire body with my own.

Out in the open garage, the gunfire suddenly stopped.

I peeked around the heavy tire. Vincent was on his knees, his cane shattered on the floor, bleeding from a shoulder wound. Damian stood over him, the barrel of his smoking pistol pressed directly against the center of Vincent’s forehead.

""Please, Damian..."" Vincent whimpered, tears of cowardice mixing with the blood on his face. ""We share the same blood! Leonardo wouldn't want you to murder your own flesh and blood!""

""Leonardo wanted to protect his family,"" Damian said, his voice dropping into an icy, hollow void. ""And you are not family. You are a cancer.""

Damian didn't pull the trigger. Instead, he struck Vincent across the temple with the heavy steel butt of his weapon, knocking the older man unconscious onto the bloodstained concrete.

Sirens wailed in the distance. Blue and red emergency lights began to flash through the grated windows of the garage.

Damian lowered his weapon and turned toward us. The lethal monster vanished, replaced by a man looking upon the only people in the world who had made his cold mansion feel alive. He walked over, slowly sinking to his knees before Emma and me.

""Are you hurt?"" he asked, his hands shaking slightly as he reached out to check Emma's arms.

Emma sniffled, wiped her nose on her sleeve, and looked at the mafia kingpin who had just fought through hell for her. Slowly, she extended her one-eyed teddy bear, offering it to him.

May you like

""You have an owie on your knuckles, Mr. Damian,"" she whispered. ""Barnaby says he can make it feel better.""

A single, silent tear slipped down Damian’s scarred cheek. For the first time in fifteen years, the feared boss of Chicago allowed himself to weep.
