Chapter 9 - The Baptism of Blood and Gold

Two months later, Saint Michael’s Cathedral in downtown Chicago was closed to the public under the heaviest security operation the city had ever witnessed. Armored black sedans lined every avenue for six blocks. Sharpshooters occupied the bell towers, and federal agents who had been monitoring our family kept a respectful, cautious distance. Inside the cathedral, illuminated by thousands of flickering white candles and towering stained-glass windows depicting Saint Michael triumphing over the dragon, the entire Romano empire had gathered.

It was the official christening of Donna Bella and Donna Bianca Romano.

The twin girls looked like twin angels, dressed in matching heirloom christening gowns of antique Venetian lace. Bella, ever the rebellious princess, was busy chewing on the corner of her lace bonnet, while Bianca looked around with wide, solemn green eyes, fascinated by the singing choir.

Standing beside me at the baptismal altar, Clara looked breathtaking. She wore an ivory silk gown that accentuated every curve, her hair pinned up in an intricate crown of braids, accented with modest diamond pins. She carried herself not as an outsider or a former servant, but as the undisputed queen of the Romano empire. The respect she commanded wasn't born of fear; over the past eight weeks, she had spearheaded the creation of a massive private foundation in my late father's name, funding free medical clinics and shelters across the impoverished districts of Chicago. She had turned the Romano name from a symbol of underworld terror into a fortress of genuine community protection.

Father Thomas, our family priest, smiled down at the twins. ""Who stands as the protector and guardian of these children?""

""I do,"" I spoke, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the vaulted arches of the cathedral.

""And who stands as their mother and guiding light?""

""I do,"" Clara said, her voice rich with unwavering conviction.

When the holy water was gently poured over their foreheads, neither child cried. Bianca simply smiled, while Bella reached out and splashed the water toward the priest, causing the hardened mafia capos in the front pews to break into genuine, affectionate laughter.

As the ceremony concluded, I stepped up to the pulpit, turning to face the hundreds of soldiers, capos, business associates, and family allies who had filled the cathedral. The room fell into absolute, reverent silence.

""Eighteen months ago,"" I addressed the congregation, ""this family was bleeding from an internal sickness. Deceit, greed, and the cowardly abandonment of our own blood nearly tore this empire apart from the inside. But God delivered my daughters back to me through the courage of a woman who refused to surrender to darkness.""

I descended the altar steps, walking over to Clara. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside rested a custom-designed ring: a central emerald surrounded by two matching flawless diamonds, forged from the very stone Bella had dropped into Clara’s palm on that fateful night.

The entire church held its collective breath.

I dropped to one knee before her, in front of God, my family, and every dangerous man who had ever bowed to my command.

""Clara,"" I said, my voice thick with emotion. ""You gave me my children. You healed a broken empire. And you showed a ruthless killer what it actually means to have a soul. I don't want to spend another sunrise without you by my side. Will you marry me and rule this family as my wife?""

Clara covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure, unadulterated joy streaming down her cheeks. Bella clapped wildly from Marco’s arms, shouting, ""MAMA SAY YES! DADDY PRETTY!""

May you like

""Yes,"" Clara whispered, her voice carrying through the quiet sanctuary before she threw her arms around my neck. ""A thousand times, yes.""

The cathedral erupted in a deafening standing ovation, cheers echoing off the stone walls as I swept my future wife into my arms and kissed her beneath the warm light of the altar.
