Chapter 4 - The Tarmac Ambush

The sound of shattering metal and crunching fiberglass shattered the quiet midnight fog over the Gary airfield. Our convoy swerved into a broad tactical formation, cutting off the taxiway and completely boxing in the Gulfstream jet before it could turn toward the main runway. Men in unmarked black tactical gear immediately dropped their duffel bags and raised automatic weapons, spraying a relentless hail of lead across our windshields. Bulletproof glass spiderwebbed with deafening impacts, but the armor held firm.

""Stay down!"" I roared at Clara, pushing her and Bella flat onto the floorboards between the seats. ""Marco! Flank the landing gear! Take out the engine cowlings!""

I kicked open the heavy door, rolling out into the freezing Indiana rain as gunshots cracked through the darkness. The smell of burning aviation fuel and cordite filled my lungs. Two hostiles attempted to take cover behind a fuel truck, but my rifle was already up. Two clean, controlled bursts dropped them instantly into the wet gravel.

""Hold your fire!"" a voice screamed from the top of the aircraft stairs.

A tall man in a tailored trench coat stepped out of the cabin, holding a small bundle wrapped in an ivory wool blanket against his chest. In his right hand, a silver revolver was pressed directly against the temple of the sleeping infant.

It was Dr. Arthur Vance—the former chief of obstetrics at Saint Jude’s Memorial, and my mother’s personal family physician for over twenty years.

""Back off, Lorenzo!"" Vance shrieked, his voice ragged with sheer desperation. Rain plastered his thinning gray hair to his skull. ""Tell your men to lower their weapons, or I pull this trigger! Your mother promised me ten million dollars and a safe haven in Switzerland! You think I'm going to spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary or let your family bury me in an unmarked grave?!""

Marco and four of my men raised their rifles, but I raised my hand in a sharp, urgent signal. ""Hold! Nobody shoot!""

Inside the ivory blanket, a tiny, fragile arm shifted. On her delicate wrist, catching the glaring glare of the tarmac floodlights, was a glittering band of pure gold.

My breath caught in my throat. It was her. Bella’s twin sister.

Behind me, the car door clicked open.

""Lorenzo, no..."" Clara whispered from the shadows of the vehicle, her heart breaking at the sight of her stolen baby held hostage. She clutched Bella, who had begun to whimper at the sound of the rain and sirens.

""Vance,"" I took a slow, deliberate step forward, lowering my rifle to my side, leaving my chest completely exposed. ""You've known me since I was a boy. You know what I do to people who cross my family. But you also know that I always honor an offered deal. You give me my daughter, and I let you walk onto that plane alone. You take the jet, you take the fuel, and you disappear into Europe. You harm that child, and there isn't an ocean or a continent on this planet that will hide you from my men.""

Vance laughed hysterically, his hand shaking violently against the infant’s head. ""You think I'm a fool? The moment I hand her over, you'll put a bullet between my eyes! Your mother was right—you’re a ruthless animal! She wanted this baby gone because she knew a twin would split the Romano empire in half! She knew the other families would smell weakness!""

""The only weakness here,"" I said, my voice dropping to a deadly, hypnotic calm as I closed the distance by another two feet, ""is thinking that a Romano abandons his blood.""

Suddenly, Vance’s grip slipped on the wet metal railing. The baby stirred, letting out a sharp, frightened wail.

That single, high-pitched cry was identical to the sound Bella made whenever she woke from a nightmare. It broke something inside Clara. Ignoring all warnings of gunfire, she burst from the armored vehicle, running into the rain with wild, desperate abandon.

""GIVE ME MY BABY!"" Clara screamed.

May you like

Vance panicked, his eyes darting toward the screaming mother. For a fraction of a second, the revolver drifted an inch away from the infant’s head.

That was all the opening I needed.
