Chapter 7 - The True Mother of the Empire

The following morning broke clear and bright over Lake Michigan, the golden autumn sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the mansion’s private family wing. For the first time since Bella had arrived eighteen months ago, the grand house didn't feel like a cold, echoing fortress of secrets—it felt like a home.

In the center of the massive, sunlit nursery, an enormous velvet rug was covered in wooden blocks, plush animals, and half-eaten slices of fresh fruit.

Bella and Bianca sat side by side, completely inseparable. They were dressed in matching pale-yellow sundresses, their dark curls bouncing as they babbled to each other in a secret twin language only they could understand. Bella was busy trying to balance three wooden blocks on Bianca’s head, while Bianca giggled hysterically, repeatedly clapping her tiny hands and knocking them down.

Clara sat on the floor between them, wearing one of my oversized gray cashmere sweaters that swallowed her petite frame. The dark circles beneath her eyes were still visible, but the haunted, desperate look that had consumed her for a year and a half had been replaced by a soft, glowing warmth. She watched her daughters with tears of quiet disbelief, reaching out every few seconds just to touch their curls, assuring herself that she wasn't trapped in a cruel dream.

I stood in the doorway, leaning against the polished walnut frame, a steaming mug of black coffee in my hand. For ten years, my life had been measured in territorial disputes, balance sheets, extortion, and blood feuds. I had never understood why my father had spent his entire life looking over his shoulder, miserable despite his billions. Looking at the three of them now, the answer was painfully simple: power meant nothing if your hearth was empty.

Clara noticed me standing there and smiled shyly, tucking a strand of chestnut hair behind her ear. ""You've been standing there for twenty minutes, Lorenzo.""

""Just making sure you're real,"" I admitted, walking over and sitting cross-legged on the carpet beside her.

Bella immediately crawled into my lap, pressing a plastic toy dinosaur against my chest. ""Daddy! Sissy bite dino!""

""She did, did she?"" I chuckled, pulling Bianca into the crook of my other arm. The little girl rested her head against my shoulder without an ounce of fear, her tiny hand gripping my tattooed forearm.

Clara watched us, her expression turning somber. ""Lorenzo... what happens now? The crisis is over. Your mother is gone. But... I don't belong in this world. I'm just a caterer with a mountain of debts and no family left. I can't live in a world of guns, guards, and mafia politics. But I will die before I ever let anyone separate me from my girls again.""

I set my coffee cup aside and turned to face her fully. ""Clara, look at me.""

She looked up, her emerald eyes searching mine.

""You carried my daughters through nine months of isolation. You fought an entire criminal empire just to look at Bella’s face for five seconds. You ran toward an armed madman on a rainy runway without hesitation. You are braver than any soldier or capo I have ever commanded.""

I reached into my pocket and pulled out the eighty-carat Romano diamond that Bella had handed her the night before. I placed it gently into her palm, folding her fingers over the priceless jewel.

""My debts are cleared, and your father’s name has already been officially restored by our legal team this morning,"" I continued, my voice steady and unwavering. ""A trust fund has been established in your name that ensures you and our daughters will never want for anything for the rest of your lives. If you want to leave this mansion, I will buy you any estate in the world, surrounded by my best men, and I will only visit when you allow it.""

Clara stared at the diamond, then up at me. ""And what if... what if I don't want to leave?""
